25 Drabbles, Table #1, Prompt #1: Strength
"Clara. My strong, brave Clara."
He's called her that so many times. Strong, brave. But she doesn't believe it now.
She doesn't think she's strong, or brave. She thinks she's weak, pathetic. She believed the lie the dream crab told her. She believed the fantasy world it showed her was reality. She wanted Danny to be alive, and back in her life, back in her arms, so badly, that she accepted it. She had wanted to ignore the Doctor, to forget everything, but the truth slapped her in the face harder than she'd ever slapped her alien friend.
It was just a dream. Just a fantasy. The dream crab had ripped her feelings for Danny from her heart, and used them for its own benefit. And she had been weak enough to fall for it.
That's what makes her weak, and makes her plagued with self-doubt now.
The Doctor can see it, and makes it obvious.
"You're one of the strongest young women I've ever known, Clara Oswald. And I'm so very proud of you. I'm proud to have you by my side.'
He gives her one of his rare smiles, and she can't help but smile back.
Maybe he's right. Maybe she is strong. But if she is, it's only because he makes her that way.
