118.2.2 - quote

"A friend is what the heart needs all the time."

"Shane! Goddamnit!"

Shelby's laughing as she yells at him. She would never have expected to be laughing before. Even a year ago Shane Worthington was the biggest pain in her ass. He was difficult to work with and it was hard to stand him off the track. The two of them always seemed to have trouble speaking to each other without fighting, to the point where both of them got put in the corner. But now when she's yelling at him, she's doing it with a smile on her face.

He's trying to keep a straight face of his own as he walks off with the bowl of Easter candy that he just swiped off the table in front of her. Shane is failing, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He knows that in about twenty seconds she's going to pounce him to try and get it back and he's okay with that. He's not doing this because of her diet or because he wants to drive her crazy. He just did it to make her laugh.

Sitting at the other table on the patio outside their two conjoined hotel rooms, Terry watches this exchange and just shakes his head. There are times that these two remind him of his kids. But he'd rather have that than them clawing at each other's throats. And Shelby seems to be good at removing the stick from Shane's ass, which in turn makes everyone's life a hell of a lot easier.

They've all grown a lot in the past year. Life-changing experiences will do that to you. They were strangers before, brought together and forced to collaborate or fail. And they were all too stubborn to fail so they found a way to collaborate instead. The end result was that they climbed the mountain and became the best in their chosen field. Now they're on the warpath to do it all again.

In just a few days Shelby will get behind the wheel at Phoenix, on a track that her crew knows she's nervous about and wants to conquer because doing it in testing is one thing and doing it in a race is another. They all got here early so that there wouldn't be any issues with jet lag or adjusting to the climate difference between Indiana and Arizona. And maybe, just maybe, to give them time to unwind.

They're all still fiercely competitive. When the time comes, Shelby will be as laser-focused as she's known across the sport for being. Shane will be perched on her pit box with that look that could kill. Terry will put in overtime on the car. Derrick will obsess over not missing a spot. When it's time to go, they're just as intense as they've ever been.

But today is not that time and now they just want to enjoy each other's company. Because if one thing they learned last year was how to get along, the other thing was that sometimes not always thinking about work is good for you.

Because this isn't just work. This is their entire lives. In going on two years they've already seen the highest possible highs and the most terrible lows. They've shared champagne and also tears. So they know each other inside and out by now, and they give a damn. They know that if they weren't sitting here screwing around two of them would be working too much and the other one would be massively antisocial. And they actually want to spend time together these days because they've been through the fire together.

No matter what else happens the most important thing now is that they're an actual team. Not because they have to be. Not because they're being paid to be. But because they want to be, and nothing is going to break them apart.
