"Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart." - José N. Harris
One of the hardest parts of the job was getting close to a patient and feeling helpless in trying to help them. Connor was facing that more and more it seemed since changing fellowships. Now he began to wonder had he made the right choice? Did he make the biggest mistake he could have? Did Downey have too much faith in a failure? He really tried to push those thoughts from his mind but they continually crept in. Today he was close to losing a patient. A young baby who barely even got to live. He thought maybe things were going his way but he cannot fault a good outcome for another patient. He was just at the end of his rope and sitting alone now in a room after another failed phone call? He covered his face and just began to cry for that little boy. He began to cry for his parents who he knew were losing hope on their baby boy surviving. Maybe he wasn't cut out for dealing with children, they always said those cases were the hardest.
He heard someone come in and tried to recover. He tried to hide the fact he was crying even if it wasn't rare for a doctor to cry. Its just he had never been that doctor to be found with tears falling. Was it pride? He didn't know but he saw who it was and greeted him with a nod before he went to head out. Before he cleared the door he heard Dr. Charles tell him that it took a man with heart to cry for someone else. He lifted the corner of his mouth quickly before it fell once more. He headed out of the room and to go check on his patient. He wasn't sure what more he could do, but he just couldn't let those parents think he had just given up on their boy. That wasn't what he wanted them to remember. He wanted them to know he was going to go down fighting for that baby if he had to because they deserved that. They deserved someone who wouldn't give up no matter how hopeless it all seemed. So he put on his bravest face and walked down the hall that felt like it was way too long and into his patient's room to do the same old checks that always gave the same results. That was the good part though because it meant he wasn't getting worse, but it also meant he wasn't getting any better. He smiled at the parents and looked down at the sleeping little boy. He was amazed at how peaceful he looked and was oblivious to what was going on. He envied that right now as he walked out and headed to check the computer. He didn't know why he kept looking because the list just didn't seem to change, and there was never a match waiting. He just had to keep having faith that something would work out. He wanted more than anything to save a baby's life.
