133.2. Quote
"Some days are just bad days, that's all. You have to experience sadness to know happiness, and I remind myself that not every day is going to be a good day, that's just the way it is!" - Dita Von Tesse
Reecy boarded a plane in Sydney after 10pm to fly home to New York. She had no plans of leaving until more dust had settled, but it was Justin who told her to go. No matter how sick that boy was, he still had the ability to care about other people. Sitting by the pool with him, he took one look at her and asked her why she was being weird. She couldn't lie to him. Not when he had confided so much in her lately, and she was trying to offer him a lifeline should he ever need it. She 100% meant her offer to become his primary carer, and she would make whatever sacrifices is took to be able to take it on. He had blocked her at the first hurdle, though. It was too soon for her to know if that was Justin his exacerbated mental state talking, or if he wasn't at a point where he was ready to set too many changes in motion.
It had been a long flight, but it gave her plenty of time to think. As tired as she was, she didn't sleep. She did cry. She let herself feel the pain without a barrier, and she grieved. Justin hadn't died, but he could have. Someone didn't have to die for you to grieve with for them, or even with them. Both her head and heart were heavy right now. There were no easy answers and no easy fixes. If only. Life was a cruel demon sometimes, but everyone suffered pain, heartache and loss. They suffered fear and guilt. In hindsight, you could see so much clearer. Seeing didn't mean you had answers on how to make things better. It didn't stop you wishing you could.
Reecy didn't go straight home. Instead, she asked the cab driver to take her to a venue where Justin had been due to perform at a charity event for the foundation they both worked as Ambassadors for. He had made so much money for kids suffering the same afflictions as he did. It was inevitable that Reecy would want to be involved in that too. She wanted to do all she could. Tonight, Justin couldn't appear as he was scheduled to. It was no secret what had happened to him, but the full story wasn't public and probably never would be. No matter how much exposure you got as a celebrity, you had to hold your private life sacred. You didn't have to share everything with the whole world. The whole world would still function well without knowing the good, the bad and the ugly of your life.
Ajay had once again selected her gown to perfection. It was navy with crystal embellishment, simple and understated. Befitting of the ordeal Justin and his loved ones had just gone through. Stepping up to the microphone, she took a small, bracing breath before speaking. "I know so many of you here tonight were hoping to see Justin perform. It's no secret he would always put on a show befitting of your kind and generous donations to help young people with mental health disorders to chase their dreams and have a chance to do something that gives their life purpose and meaning, just like he has had the chance to."
"We nearly lost Justin to suicide last week. I'm not here in his place. I'm here for him, to stand beside him, and promise him I keep fighting for him. We need to stand up for people with mental illness when they are unable. We need to keep supporting them, and trying our best to help them find a place they fit in this world. Hell knows, this world still has a long way to go before it's free of prejudice and judgement, before it realises help and human kindness are a free commodity that costs nothing to give. Life is hard. It's even harder when you lose your ability to keep living. This is for Justin, and everyone else who has been touched by suicide." Reecy kissed her fingers and rested her hand over her heart when she started to sing Bette Midler's I Think It's Going to Rain Today.
"Right before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
and I think it's gonna rain today."
Inevitably, she was in tears by the time she finished. She received a standing ovation, but it wasn't for her. She knew that, and she valued it. She took a vow and blew some kisses at the audience. There was no stopping her breaking down when she got backstage. She went straight to find her phone in her handbag, and even if her vision was blurred with tears, she knew exactly how to dial this particular number quickly.
"Daddy," she said when the call connected, brushing the tears from her cheeks. "Are you home? I really need you right now..."
