Quote of the Day 056.

“A baby is born with a need to be loved - and never outgrows it.”
- Frank A. Clark

James sojourn to Tiffany's had honestly been solely to buy Nat a gift, simply because she had been amazing and he wanted to emphasise how much he loved her and that, despite a bit of an initial freak-out, he was over the moon that she was having his second child. Sure, just like his toddler son, it had been an accident, but it had been an accident in a moment of comfort that they both needed and it ultimately led to a lot of confessions between them both. They decided together that Nat was definitely keeping the baby and they wanted to give it a working shot at a relationship together. James hadn't expected it to just click so easily, but it had.

He couldn't deny that Nat was the only mother that Campbell ever had. Over two years ago, he had hired her as his nanny when he was left a single father holding the baby. There was just no way he could have done it alone and even though he had suffered judgement for hiring a nanny to help it, it was the best thing he ever did. Nat was amazing with Campbell from day one and James knew he could trust her with his most precious cargo 100%. Feelings for her had developed over time, but with his horrific history of relationships and making them work, he had tried to deny to himself what he was feeling. He had been so convinced what he was feeling was just a pure adoration for a woman who took care of his son.

That was way off the mark. He had been falling in love with her, and that was why he had so easily slipped up one night when he had a terrible time at work, working a case of a kidnapping gone wrong that led to a child murder of a boy not much older than his own son. He had sought comfort with Nat, and she had been there for him. He had been exhausted and feeling alone, and she had just been there for him, and one thing led to another. He hadn't realised at the time she had feelings for him also and had just been worried about telling him in case it ruing the working relationship they had.

Nat thought she couldn't have children of her own. News she had been given relatively young and part of the reason she became a nanny. She wasn't on birth control and they slipped up. A couple of months later, she discovered she was pregnant and panicked about telling him. It all came out in the wash, so to speak. They had a huge heart-to-heart where their feelings came out, and James admitted he had feelings for her and that he had been seeing Nat as the only mother Campbell ever knew. They were going to keep their baby, and things just progressed from there. They found they actually had a pretty awesome romantic relationship too, James by her side for the whole of the important moments of the pregnancy, and Campbell - on his own accord - started to call Natalie mummy, which she adored.

Somehow, James wanted to show Nat how much she meant to him and how much it meant that they were having a baby together. He was going to surprise her with a romantic dinner at One If By Land Two If By Sea and give her the Tiffany's gift he took ages to decide on. He went in to purchase the gift... and came out with an engagement ring. It wasn't like him to be so spontaneous with such a huge decision, but when he didn't even freak out after what he did, he figured why not just roll with it?

He hadn't even waited for their dinner reservation. As soon as he got home, and he found her frazzled after running after an energetic toddler, the apartment looking like a toy store hit it, he realised this is exactly what he wanted. He wanted all this. He wanted his family, and he wanted to come home to days like this with his wife and children, and even though it was crazy and often hard, it would be amazing and maybe exactly what he had been searching for all along. She looked tired and somewhat exasperated, and just as she was handing Campbell off to him and telling him she was going for a bath and it was his turn to take the reigns, she just looked beautiful. The next thing he knew, he was down on one knee and proposing to her with the brand new Tiffany ring. Maybe it was a little crazy, and maybe they were both a little terrified, but after passing Campbell over to Uncle Sam to babysit for the rest of the afternoon and evening, they went down to City Hall and applied for a marriage licence.

It had just been one of those 'so we have it when we're ready' moments. They chatted to the cheery clerk and she was congratulating them, telling them how she hoped her boyfriend would get the hint and get her a Tiffany rock some day, but Nat was distracted looking over at the couple beside them who had just cancelled their spot to get hitched the next day because he was apparently cheating on him and she told everyone in hearing distance he was a one-balled slimebag. James had been trying to stifling his snickering, the whole thing reminding him of Ali and Mark, when Nat was suddenly blurting out the suggestion that they do it tomorrow... they actually get married that very next day.

It wasn't like Nat. She was usually the peacekeeper in her family of a pile of kids. She was the careful one, the one to make sure everything was in order and everyone was okay. Maybe it was hormones and maybe it was being swept up in the moment, but James had just laughed and shrugged, saying, "Sure, why the fuck not?" Not that it mattered to either of them, but their baby would be born in wedlock and to two loving parents who couldn't wait for them to be born, and he or she would have an awesome little roughnut of a big brother. Why shouldn't they make it official?

They piled into City Hall that morning, with Nat's three brothers, James' twin brothers, his nephew, and various partners of all of them. Ali and Andrew were supposed to be there too, but Ali had gone into labour the night before and they were at the hospital, Andrew probably valiantly trying to keep his dick and balls attached while Ali dragged herself through another labour (something she had vehemently swore she would never do again). James just did not at all realise how things were about to come a complete full circle.

The ceremony was sweet. Succinct, to the point, no bells and whistles. Nat was heavily pregnant and still looking gorgeous and glowing in a maternity gown, having told everyone not to bother dressing up too much and just wearing what they were comfortable in. James was in a light grey suit and as they waited for their turn, he had been caressing the nape of Nat's neck, telling her how beautiful he looked and teasing her that her newly dyed brunette hair gave him a boner - typical of James at any given time really. Campbell was in pale blue dress pants, a sweet little button-up shirt and bumblebee suspenders, driving a toy car up and down Justin's legs.

James couldn't be happier. He was beaming through the whole ceremony, awed and still not quite sure his brain had kept up with everything that was going on. He had nursed Campbell in his arms throughout, them both wanting the little boy part of the formalities. The marriage was more than just both of them, and he just could not believe Nat had agreed to be his wife. They exchanged vows and rings, and signed the register.

Their families were congratulating them and James was thanking the celebrant for her time, when Nat standing beside him suddenly grabbed his arm. She had a strange, panicked look on her face. For a split second, he actually truly thought this was the part where she told him she made a huge mistake and ran screaming into the street never to be seen again. Considering the baggage he came with, he couldn't really blame her for that. He didn't even have time to ask her what was wrong. She had his arm gripped so tightly her nails sunk into his skin, and then, "Uh, James... babe... either I just peed myself or our baby wants to come to the wedding," she warned in a voice much higher and shaky than it usually was, clutching her baby bump and them looking down in horror.

James blinked, not really cottoning on right away. At least, until the penny dropped and his eyes widened, followed by a strange squeak noise he made that didn't even sound very human. Their baby was coming? On the same day as Ali's? No fucking way! "O-Oh shit, no," he gasped, but Nat was nodding quickly and emphatically. "No...? Yes. Yes... yes, the baby is coming. Holy fucking hell, the baby's coming! NOBODY MOVE! OUR BABY'S COMING!" he shouted not at all rationally to anyone who was listening.

And suddenly they realised their crazy wild ride had only just began.
