Goodbye
It’s a rainy day when they head to the cemetery. Smith’s glad it’s a rainy day. It’s cloudy, no sun, just the way Jasper would have preferred it. Jasper could only go out on days like this, so he knows today is fitting. Smith hasn't said much all day but he knows no one minds, no one expects him to. He’s lucky to have the friends he does, who have helped him take care of all of this along the way. All of those friends are here now with him, holding him up, helping him keep it together. Without them, he feels like he might crumble right into the dirt below his feet, so he holds on. He holds on because he wants to live.
He doesn’t know how to say goodbye, doesn't even know where to begin, but when they lower the coffin into the ground, into the darkness, he knows this is it. This is real, and it’s time.
