"Someday, you're going to meet someone who makes you happy, makes you feel beautiful, and stands by you even when you feel like you don't deserve them." - Unknown
"Can I buy you a drink?"
Nikki turned to find Bob Terrell sitting on the bar stool next to her. "Are you stalking me now?"
"If I were, I wouldn't tell you. You strike me as the type of girl who showers with the window open." He chuckled as he slid the fruity looking drink toward her. "Is Sam here somewhere?"
She watched him suspicious and answered with caution. "No. Seriously, how did you know I would be here?"
"You told me you always come here on Wednesdays." The bald little man spun on his stool to look at the crowd. "I see what you mean about ladies night. This crowd looks positively feral."
"So you came to prowl? Bob, I'm proud of you." Nikki nudged her therapist with her elbow.
"Now, you know I'm saving myself for Elizabeth Warren. I came here for you."
Nicole turned to the drink he gave her and swirled the straw. "You're off the clock. Why were you looking for me?"
"I had a question and it's going to bug me all night if I don't just ask you."
She looked up and shrugged. "Shoot."
"Not literally." He chuckled at his own terrible joke. "I wanted to know what love means to you."
Nikki blinked hard and stared at the shrink like he grew another head. "You followed me to a bar, on your personal time, to ask me what love means?"
"What it means to you."
She still looked utterly confused but answered "I like being around him."
"That's all. Hell, you must love me then." Bob teased.
Nikki rolled her eyes and took a sip from what turned out to be a bahama mama. "I don't know how to describe it. He was never supposed to be someone that meant anything to me. I needed him to get close to my brother. Then I needed him for leverage against my brother in case he couldn't keep our truce. The concessions I made for him didn't seem like much at first. He already liked me. I didn't need to keep using my powers on him. I even told him about using my abilities when we first met. I needed him to trust me. It wasn't full disclosure but he seemed satisfied enough. I don't know when it started to change. Suddenly, the lies I told him about not being able to stay away, weren't lies. I wasn't slipping away in the middle of the night. I told myself it was because his coffee was better than Starbucks but I was just lying to myself at that point. I saw the way he interacted with his friends. He geniunely loves the people around him and he never keeps score. I've never met someone that can forgive so completely. He may not forget that someone hurt him but he can't seem to hold a grudge to save his life. I wanted him to know me or maybe I wanted to be more like the girl I was pretending to be. That girl stood a decent chance of getting my brother back and an even better chance that Sam would fall for her. Me. I wanted that to be me."
The doctor listens intently then gives Nikki a nod. "He does, indeed, sound like an amazing person. You mentioned his ability to forgive his friends and not have past sins count against them. You've mentioned to me on several occasions that you don't necessarily believe in sin and that morality is relative but his ability to forgive seems very important to you."
She bristled under the scrutiny of her words. "Are you asking something?"
"No," Bob replied cheerfully. "I just thought it was interesting. Anyway, I will leave you to your hunt, madam. House Hunters International comes on it 30 minutes and I have a date with Tahiti."
Nicole snorted and gave the little man a wave. He was barely off the stool when younger man took his place with his best pick-up line. Unfortunately, as cute as he was, all she could think about was Sam. In the middle of the guy trying to lay down his game, Nikki pulled out her phone. He was out with Ethan so she couldn't call him but she did shoot him a little text so he would know she was thinking of him.
