081.2. Muse Prompts: Quotes

"Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is." - Jim Morrison

Felicity's first trip to Central City had been when Barry had his wake-up call. It was just a wake-up call that confused him because he had been stuck so hard and fast in the comfort zone he had built up around him over the years, that he actually convinced himself that their instant attraction and connection was just because they were so alike.

The Iris Factor, that he had come to think of the whole thing in his head, was the biggest roadblock. He thought he was still very much in unrequited love with Iris that when he had come out of his coma, he was stuck on it like a scratch CD. He kept skipping over and over that old scar, back-tracking because it was familiar and it was easy. But he didn't really want familiar and easy. What he wanted was someone who got him, someone he could laugh with, and someone he didn't have to hide with.

And that was Felicity.

Since she surprised him with a visit, he couldn't get her off his mind. They had even shared a goodbye kiss and a bit of a nerdy pact that they were "perfectly perfect" for each other, but their hearts belonged to each other. The only problem was that just after that bittersweet moment was when the penny dropped for Barry that his heart really didn't belong to anyone else. He loved Iris, he was very fond of her because she was a constant in his life, but he wasn't in love with her. From there on, Felicity had been invading his thoughts and even his attempts to sleep. There was one very shameless moment when he had woken up out of a doze, realised he had been dreaming about her, and had to 'take care of business' in the shower before going to work for the day.

But the Iris Factor kept coming back to plague him. She was getting into danger and he had to save her, sure. Then he failed to save her, and she got all passive-aggressive on The Flash, which definitely helped him begin to close the book on that long chapter of his life. She was happy with Eddie, and Barry was sure deep down inside that she couldn't make him happy, or make him smile widely, the way Felicity so freely managed without even trying.

Things got complicated and messy. Joe and his dad both called him out on his patchy lingering feelings for Iris, and that was when he realised he had to talk to both Iris and Felicity. He had tried to talk to Felicity about a week ago, but when Cisco sent him a text that he was urgently needed, he had to dash off in a 'flash' to deal with it. It left Felicity hanging, and when she had come to Central City again with Oliver, he baulked completely because, well... Oliver. She was in love with Oliver. Very in love with him. He didn't want to do that unrequited crush thing again, so he talked himself out of coming clean.

Instead, he dealt with the Iris Factor to at least free his mind and heart of those old strings. No strings attached was probably the best way to be with his life getting more and more complicated. But confessing his fading out feelings to Iris had been hard, but most definitely cathartic. Despite the mess with the guy who killed his mother and things getting more confusing and painful by the second, he knew he had to tell Felicity how he felt.

After leaving Joe's place that morning, he had stopped to get coffee at the place Iris worked and then planned to go to his office and brood over the evidence board of his mom's death alone with his whirlwind of thoughts. He passed a jewellery store, though, and with an absentminded glance in the window, he spotted a cute and bright looking necklace. It felt like a sign, and his mind was immediate tugged back to Felicity, who had told him her favourite flowers were sunflowers and daisies, or anything bright. He had taken her a bunch of flowers after that on his first attempt to try to tell her he had developed feelings for her, but got interrupted.

Nothing could stop him going into that jewellery store and making the immediate purchase. It made him smile because he could picture her wearing it. Damnit, he really had to talk this out with her before it turned into the Irish Factor v2.0...
