092.7. Misc prompt
Toutes les choses sont difficiles avant d'être faciles (All things are difficult before they are easy)
It was a year and a half ago that Angel proposed to Rose on her birthday in Venice. Back then, the likelihood of a huge, bright, fun wedding with masses of fantastic music would have been a given. But it wasn’t long after their epic “oops” moment discovering that she was accidentally pregnant, probably as a result of an extremely horny, passionate and drunk encounter in the back of a limo.
Then they decided to wait until the baby was born so he or she could be at their wedding. By the time they welcomed little Daisy into the world a year ago, being parents overtook the need to have a big flashy wedding and they both decided they wanted something more simple anyway. Things took a rough and painful turn around that time when Beau, Angel’s twin’s husband, was diagnosed with leukemia, something he had battled as a child. The cancer had come back. Just about everything at that point was put well and truly on the backburner to try to cope with the exhaustion of being new parents and the stress of someone they loved being that sick.
It was definitely a long and winding road, full of heartache and fear. Beau’s battling this time around was fraught with complications when his body struggle to maintain the fight. They very nearly lost him, but Austin hadn’t been able to honour his Do Not Resuscitate order. They were a unique little family unit, always there for each other and did whatever it took to just keep going and taking care of each other.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, Angel, completely smitten with his baby daughter, decided to take a hiatus from performing, dropping down to just charity performances and events because his charities meant the world to him. He wanted more time with Daisy, so he could be there for all her firsts, and he wanted to use his musical talents to do more. In a bolt from the blue, he decided he wanted to study to become a Musical Therapist, and was a shoo-in on the course. Rose knew him, though. She knew ever since he had heard he was becoming a father, the wheels had been churning over and over in his mind feeling that he had established his music career, had the platinum albums under his belt, had done the world tours, etc. etc. He wanted to offer more.
Rosie couldn’t be more proud of him either. She had fallen so hard and fast in love with him, but it hadn’t started there. She had been the epitome of a fangirl, and had fangirled him to the max when she was suddenly in his presence one day on a business meeting with her BFF, Damien who was kicking off his own music career. The attraction was mutual, and he swept her off her feet, wining and dining her on their first date, treating her like a princess, treating her to a private show… and that was before the hot limo encounter. Ever since then, there wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t feel loved and like a princess. They never even argued. Maybe things surrounding them were just too painful to argue through, and having their daughter only solidified their relationship.
Beau then got the amazing news, following a bone marrow transplant with complications, that he was in remission. Actually, he first thought he was dying because his body was rejecting the transplant, but it just turned out to be a common post-op infection. Either way, he was on the mend and his last wish before the procedure to Austin - thinking he would probably die - would be that if he survived, he wanted a baby. There was no doubt about it that Rose wanted to offer to be their surrogate. No, it hadn’t been long since she gave birth to her first child, but parenthood was the most amazing thing she ever did. In her whole life, without question. Her baby girl meant the world to her, and Angel just as much because they created her together. She wanted Austin and Beau to have that chance, know how that felt, experience it after all their pain. So, the IVF process commence, with a donor egg.
It had gone smoothly. Too smoothly. Way too smoothly. The actual IVF anyway. Rosie found out she was pregnant from the first go. It seemed too good to be true… and now it was. The pregnancy hadn’t been easy. She had been very tired, morning sickness unrelenting, and the general discomfort had wiped her out. It wiped her out so much that it got to the point she was literally just lying in bed for hours on end because moving made the nausea worse. She had been anticipating reaching the end of the first trimester, hoping she might get some relief.
Four weeks short. Eight weeks in, and she miscarried the pregnancy. Even that wasn’t easy. She had been in horrific pain and bleeding, needing to be rushed to hospital for an emergency procedure to take care of it. Ever since then, she had been numb and miserable. Her huge family, and extended family, weren’t far away and on hand for support, but all she wanted was Angel and Daisy near her to try to lick her wounds through all this. She felt like she failed, and it was her fault the pregnancy didn’t succeed.
She had only been home from hospital a few hours. Austin and Beau were trying their bed to be supportive and help, but she knew they were in pain too. She was so starkly aware of that, that it was hard for her to be in their presence. They went to bed, Daisy cuddled in between them and the covers wrapped up cosily around them, and Rose just broke down. She cried harder than she had in a very long time, and it felt like she could stop. God only knew how long that last for.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, they had made a decision. Rose ached for something to help the pain stopped. She wanted Angel to be her husband. She was too tired and too weak to try to hold herself up to support everyone else, and have her own needs and wants constantly put on the backburner. She was selfish, now wasn’t the time to be thinking of herself. But she needed it. A year and a half with a ring on her finger, and constantly having to push it back and push it back so she could be on hand to help everyone else be cared for and give them what their heart’s desired.
She just wanted a little piece of that too.
Now here she was, still lying in bed with her amazing fiance and their baby girl napping between them, looking at dresses online on Angel’s iPad. The cost of them all were probably what some people would pay for a house, but he wanted her to have one thing that was hers and hers alone, that made her feel like a bride about to become his wife.
Friday, they were going to City Hall to get married. She didn’t need a big flashy celebrity wedding. She didn’t even need a small one. She didn’t need a cake, or doves, or limos, or diamond encrusted shoes. She didn’t need to be the centre of attention, or have lavish things showered on her because it was “her day”. She had never needed any of those things, it had never been her. Maybe that was why she never actually got to the point of wedding planning beyond just wanting her little girl to be part of it? She just wanted to be Angel’s wife, and have their little family made official finally. It wasn’t too much to ask, was it? It wasn’t self-centred to take this little piece of something, some time just for herself with Angel and Daisy, after giving so much for everyone else?
It all hurt so much, and now the tears were going to come again, making the dress pictures on the iPad screen swim. Angel’s arms were closing protectively around her again and he kissed her head before he just held her. “I love you, baby. I love you no matter what.”
All she got out was a soft sob of, “Thank you,” in against his shoulder that she was soaking with more tears and snot. She was a mess but at least she didn’t have to be a mess alone.
