098.7 Collection #1: Do your best
Curtis didn't know the first thing about being a father. He knew that, and he accepted it, because going in like a bull at a gate with a lot of father-knows-best bullshit would not only fuck his relationship with his son and said son's mother from the very start, but would make him a pretty major dickhead. He was brand new to this. If he were being honest, he'd known for a while now that Benny was his on some level. Just because the numbers lined up pretty closely didn't mean that he was Benny's dad, but he also knew Dani, and he knew she wasn't in the habit of fucking her way through every guy in the world. Not that he would've judged if she had been. He was of the belief that your body was your own, and what you did with it, so long as you weren't hurting anyone else, more power to you.
But before he'd headed over to Dani's, he had to admit, though, that he was nervous about meeting his son for the first time. Benny was nearly three years old, and according to Ash, he looked like Curtis, though Curtis himself had looked at the photos in Dani's office ever since he'd started to wonder about the boy being his son, and he couldn't say he'd seen it. All he saw when he looked at the photos was Dani. He had Dani's coloring, and from the photos, he looked small and petite, just like she was. Maybe he'd see it more when he actually saw the little guy in person.
What he hadn't been expecting was for Dani to call him and tell him that she needed him to go over to her place and take over for her twin, Luci, who was babysitting the little guy, because she was going to need to stay longer with the little boy she was working with, because he was taking time to come around. Curtis had assured her that was no problem, gotten the address to her place, and had showed up right on time to allow Luci to head out to a cast thing for the show she was on. And then he was alone with Benny, after a quick rundown from Luci for where his sippy cups were, and the explanation that he wasn't really active today, and seemed to sort of not be feeling well. She wasn't sure if he was really sick, or just having an off day, but he was resting either way.
Curtis had very firmly assured her that he had it all in hand, and she had headed off, leaving father and son alone together. Benny hadn't appeared to be upset by the appearance of the stranger. He knew his mom and Auntie Luci wouldn't leave him alone with anyone who'd hurt him. He just sat quietly, both tiny hands wrapped around his cup of apple juice while he watched Curtis quietly with his big brown eyes. It took every ounce of strength in Curtis not to break down in tears right there. It would've been a major awkward moment. But the emotion was overwhelming, looking at this tiny boy and realized that he'd made him with the woman that he loved -- still loved, even after all this time. That was a whole different thing, though. Something that he probably needed to get his focus off of for now. He sat at Benny's feet, patting them gently. "Hey, buddy," he said to him softly, just trying to make those first connections. He couldn't help wondering if this would've been what he felt like when they'd placed him in his arms as a newborn if he'd been there. Would the emotions have been the same? Or different? He'd chattered away to Benny, keeping his voice soft and comforting and trying to watch the little boy for his reactions.
He found himself staring down at the little boy in surprise when Benny shifted over closer to his side. Curtis took it as a sign that he was probably needing comfort, and he immediately put his arm around the little boy, holding him close to his side. "Are you not feeling good, buddy?" he asked softly, shifting as Benny grabbed hold of his arm with one hand. "Can you tell me what hurts?" Benny wasn't exactly talkative right now, which was part of Luci's first sign that he wasn't well apparently. She said he was a talker for one so little, but he hadn't said much of anything today. Curtis hated to see the little guy not feeling well, but it was comforting that his quiet wasn't because he was scared of Curtis. He didn't tell Curtis what was hurting, but instead looked up at him with eyes welling up with tears, and within seconds, so fast that he hadn't even seen it coming, the little boy was projectile vomiting down the side of Curtis's shirt. His lip wibbled, and he started bawling, and there was just a brief second where Curtis felt utter panic coming to the surface. He wanted to call Dani, but right now, that wasn't his best option. She was working, he was Benny's dad, and it was his job to take care of his son, no matter what that took. He peeled out of his t-shirt quickly and wrapped it up so that the sick was covered so he could set it aside and gently lift his son into his arms. Benny rested his head against his father's bare shoulder as Curtis gave him a quick look over to be sure that there wasn't any vomit on his clothes. Thank fuck, they'd dodged that bullet, and Curtis was shifting him again so that he could very gently rub his back.
"It's okay, buddy," he assured him quietly, with soft soothing noises. "I'm sorry you don't feel well. It's okay. I've got you, Benny. Your tummy must really hurt." He pressed a soft kiss to the little boy's soft hair, his own eyes flooding with tears that he blinked away so that he could try and find a cloth to wet with cool water. He was flying blind here, but he knew that a cool cloth always felt good after you'd been sick, and he could start with that. Benny was still crying, and it felt like someone was stabbing Curtis in the heart over and over, because knowing the little boy hurt was hurting like hell. Curtis's heart ached for Dani, too, wondering how many times she'd gone through this alone with no one but herself to lean on for support. But for the moment, Benny was the priority, and the little boy was hurting.
Benny responded well to the cool cloth, even murmuring a polite thank you, which Curtis was sure was a sign of Dani's parenting. The little boy would definitely be being raised to be polite and a good boy. He had no doubt of Dani's parenting skills at all.
Maybe it was the memory of a few too many benders gone wrong and the miserable hangovers that followed, but Curtis knew he needed to keep the little one hydrated as much as he could if he could coax him to drink more after he'd just thrown up everything he'd been drinking. Benny took the apple juice he was offered, but he only took a few small sips of it. He was so tired and felt so yucky. Curtis could see it written all over the little face, and it hurt. But what felt awesome was that Benny seemed to understand that the guy taking care of him was doing so because he loved him. And love him he did. It was the craziest feeling, loving someone you'd only just met, but it was real. Benny was definitely small, and Curtis loved the way he fit into his arms as they settled back onto the couch together. He had no idea how the fuck to do any of this, but he had every intention of doing the best he could, one way or another.
