103.4.2 - drabble

Trapped

Drivers are not supposed to get out of the car after a crash. I can't get out of the car. I can't stand up. My head is swimming and for a minute I'm not entirely sure where I am. I resist a wave of nausea by taking a deep breath. That makes me aware of a sharp pain in my chest that I'll find out is two bruised ribs.

Peter has been in my ear asking for me to say something for 75 seconds now; I try a shallower breath, tell him I'm okay. "This is not good," I say to myself as the safety team arrives, helps me out of the car. They'll have to tow it off the track. I get to take the ride to the infield care center.

Every IndyCar driver, every professional racing driver, wrecks at some point in their career. It's just a matter of time and whether or not you can walk away. In retrospect I'll appreciate that all I have is a concussion and bruised ribs. But right now, staring at the ceiling waiting for the doctor, all I'm thinking is I screwed that up.
