104.4.1 - drabble
Take a chance
"Shelby, I need you to go left."
Surprise doesn't cover what she's feeling when she hears Shane say that. It takes her half a second to look down at the lower racing line and see that the narrow air between Marco and Ed is almost too close for them, let alone sticking another car in there.
"Left? I can't go left. There's not enough room."
She tells him without an ounce of doubt, which is why she's surprised when she hears him snap back at her a moment later, his tone like a sledgehammer. Sudden and unyielding.
"There will be room. Just do it."
Shelby looks again, wonders if Shane really knows what he's doing. Wonders if he might be about to get her wrecked. But she flicks the wheel and leans on the throttle, and it's just as she's coming up on their back tires that Ed moves up a line and like the sea parting, it's nothing but clean air. Which is good, because she needs to catch her breath after a razor-close move like that.
As she's making up two positions, she realizes that no matter how well they do or don't get along, she's just going to have to trust him.
