107.4 - Bitch

Gone were the sweet, crisp autumn nights that held so much promise. When Nikki walked out of the hotel she was greeted by a cold so bitter it made it even harder to breathe than the emotional turmoil she was struggling to swallow down. Her whole world was coming unraveled and the only thing she could think to do was run. She was so focused on her next step that she didn't notice the tall Asian man staring at her until he spoke.

"It's really you."

Nicole looked up unsure if it was her he was speaking to because she didn't recognize him at all. However, a quick glance behind her confirmed that there was no one else he could be talking to and irritation set it. Of all the times to be recognized and stopped, this asshole chose when she was at her most broken-hearted.

"Yeah, it's me." She replied with a sneer as she's walked faster but he didn't catch the hint. "When I saw you in the magazine I wasn't sure. Your hair is so different now but seeing you in person there is no doubt. I never stopped looking for you Desiree."

Desiree was a name she hadn't used in years. Since before she left IO. So she was more than a little surprised to hear him use it and struggled to remember which of her marks this could be but she came up blank. "You're mistaken. My name isn't Desiree."

"I know!" He replied quickly keeping her pace as she tried to make her escape. "In the magazine they called you Nicole Callahan. Is that your real name? It's pretty though it might take some getting used to." He chuckled.

Nikki stopped and glared into the man's adoring face. "You're not going to have to worry about getting used to it because I am not whoever you think I am. There is nothing between us. There never was. If I gave you the name Desiree, you were a job. That's it. I don't even recognize you. So do yourself a favor and move the fuck on already."

The smile on his face seemed to freeze in place a moment before melting into sadness and just a hint of anger. "That's not true. There was a connection. I know you felt it too."

Her laugh was as cold and bitter as the the air around them. "That's my power, genius. I can make you love me with a touch but I feel nothing. You had something I wanted. As soon as I had it, I didn't need you anymore. I didn't even care enough to kill you. You were that insignificant. So if you've really been looking for me for years, you've wasted your time. Now if you'll excuse me."

She hailed a cab and didn't look back so she didn't see how deep a cut she made. Not that it would have mattered. She was way too focused on her failing marriage to worry about some random asshole on the street. A mistake that could prove fatal.
