Wait
Brett was usually a stereotypical sort of guy. He liked sports, fart jokes were hilarious, and he wasn't the sort to cry. It wasn't that he didn't feel emotion, it was just more likely that he would cover up feelings with blokey stuff like thumping a punching bag or hooking up to get laid so he didn't have to think about it.
The funeral for Zoran's father was going to change all that. Brett wasn't prepared for what happened. He knew he would be seeing Zoran upset, but he had been seeing that for a few weeks now. Seeing it, and not really knowing what to say to his foster brother. He didn't know how to help, so he resorted to joking things off. That wasn't possible today. When Zoran had started talking, all Brett could do was stand there between his sisters and watch in shock while he listened. He listened, and started to feel sick.
Blow after blow, Zoran told them all what he had been through. It was the first Brett was hearing just about all of this. It was the first most of them were hearing it. As soon as Zoran was breaking down, Brett felt something inside himself snap too. Sally had a vice-like grip on his hand. It was obvious his sisters were being hit with just as much shock as he was. Brett just couldn't stop it when he broke down in tears too, and it only got worse when Zoran was shouting with pent-up distress and anger.
Brett tried to break away to go over to his brother, but it was his dad that held him back from getting to Zoran with a firm hand on his shoulder. For some reason, that broke Brett even more. Nothing in the world had ever made him feel this helpless. Was he just supposed to wait until Zoran stopped and not do anything? He just shook his head, pushing away from his family and walked away from them in tears. It was the first time he had openly broken down and that was making all of this even harder to cope with.
