111.1.2 - lyrics
"There's something going on that wasn't here before
Keep your eyes glued to the floor
There's something strange going on tonight
There's something going on that's not quite right."
When the man that you love is involved in serving the country, maybe it's only a matter of time before something comes down on your head. At least that was the thought Shelby had as she walked right into her boyfriend by the poolside. This wasn't supposed to be anything big; some party thrown by a billionaire who, being a racing fan, had requested the presence of the country's first female motorsports champion. And she had said yes, thinking that going to something on a private island would be good for a weekend away. Not that she would be mixed up in something much worse.
In the month that they'd been together, he had always been clear about one thing: he didn't want her in his work. They'd never spoken about it expressly but it was obvious to her in how he behaved. There were things he couldn't tell her and then things he just wouldn't tell her. They never spoke about what he was doing beyond her asking if he was physically and sometimes emotionally okay. Even the night he'd turned up on her doorstep, looking like hell, he'd still never told her what had happened.
Shelby respected that for the most part. She knew that his instinct was to protect her and keep her away from the dangers he faced. And it was easier for her, too, not having to explain to her team or her sponsors why she was getting into trouble or showing up with an injury she had no explanation for. But at the same time she was nothing if not loyal. And it seemed disloyal to her if she knew the man she wanted to marry was risking his ass and she didn't at least offer to help. Especially if it was for the greater good.
That was how she ended up in an uncomfortable position, letting the aforementioned billionaire think he had a shot with her in order to distract him. Unable to keep from feeling like she was pimping herself out basically, at least until the moment she got in over her head and wound up tied to a chair. Shelby has done a number of risky things in her life - racing a fighter jet, fighting with people who are professionally trained to hurt people, and most recently needing to have her right arm extricated from an engine mount - but being tied to a chair on an island took the cake.
It didn't escape her that she could have just as easily been killed. If the person working against her boyfriend had chosen another path who knows. She's a trained fighter but at the end of the day, she's a race car driver, not a soldier. Her fighting skills are intended to protect her from thieves and anyone who gets a little grabby in a bar, not enemy agents. She thought that would make a terrible headline: Reigning IndyCar champion murdered while attending party in international waters. It sounded like a tabloid story.
Luckily he came back for her and they were both able to get off that island and to a nice hotel room someplace much safer. She had a hot shower and a chance to decompress. But she's seen it now. Been a part of this world he's tried so hard to keep from her. There's no going back; she can't pretend she didn't just go through that. She knows he looks at her and worries about her, and she looks at him and wonders what else he's hiding and whether or not she'll really be the woman he needs her to be.
