118.4. Drabble

Perfect

Beau knew that eventually, he was going to have to stop staring at the tiny baby in the hospital crib to remember to get some sleep. Eventually wasn't right now, though. He was sitting there with elbows resting on the edge of it, head in his hands just watching the newborn sleeping. He was swaddled in a fluffy blue blanket and still wearing his knitted Yoda ear hat. The last thing anyone gave a fuck about was neutrality. Contrary to popular opinion, some people actually thought the blue and pink thing was cute. If you only had one chance at a baby, you were going to jump in and take the full experience it offered, even all the tiny and insignificant parts.

He really did try to resist picking him up, but it was impossible. Beau was a doctor, but he still scooped the little bundle up with complete care, making sure he was holding onto him correctly. There was only a tiny snuffling from Elliott in protest, but he was nestled securely in Beau's arms and just slept on. "I never thought I'd get one of you," Beau told him softly. He brushed the back of his finger over the baby's cheek, and then he was going to tear up again. "Shi-- fu-- crap. I promise I'll stop bawling whenever I hold you eventually. Maybe not until you're, like, twenty-one... or maybe fifty-one. Give or take. How are you even real...?" The whisper was awed and even if there was the gentle weight of the infant in his arms, this still all felt like a dream.

"I have so much to say to you, but when I look at you, it's like there's not enough words," he murmured and gazed at the face perfect little sleeping face. Once again, he tried to think of all the words he thought he would want to say to his child, one he had believed every since he had cancer was impossible to have. But he could sit here and talk until he sprained his jaw and even forgot what words were, and it wouldn't be enough.

Instead, he just nuzzled his nose so softly against Elliott's forehead and then kissed it tenderly. "I love you. If I died, I would never have met you, and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that the only reason I got a third chance at life was because I had to be here for you." He didn't put Elliott back in the crib. Instead, he settled in one of the chairs, cuddling the baby in his arms and knew this was exactly the reason his husband couldn't let him die.
