002.3 Drabble prompt - Something Broken
Murphy was truly rat-arsed that night. It was an Irish tradition on New Year's eve. On most evenings, if you were a MacManus. Rocco had never failed at keeping up, he was usually the first one to start toasting. And even though he claimed to be as broke as they were at that time of the month, the man always walked in with a couple of bottles to share.
Glasses were raised, clicked together, laughs were shared. The boys cheered on Murphy and playfully smacked the top of his head after he finished his shot in one go, slammed the glass down so hard it shattered to pieces.
It is a New Year's Irish tradition, leaving a spare seat for the loved ones that have left us. And so Rocco has his own seat every New Year's eve. A toast. A laugh. A sad smile the brothers share.
He can't help but think about the New Year's eve they spent the three of them by themselves. The broken shot glass.
Every now and then, he slams the small glasses down, hoping to relive that feeling. Steal a smile from his brother. Make Rocco proud.
