Shelby makes it a point to drive for pleasure as much as she does for racing. She never wants to just confine her passion to her career. So with a break after the two races in six days that were Pocono and Texas, she pulls her Mercedes CLK Black out of her garage in Indianapolis and she goes for a drive.
The final two races of the season are on the horizon and they're already deep in discussion about what to do in order to ensure a happy ending. Do they stick with the plan that worked last year, having her trainer give up his life here for two weeks to follow her and keep her on her workout regimen so that she's in her best shape? But they had done that assuming that might be her only title shot. Knowing now that it's not do they avoid the logistics and expense and just let her go it alone? Or would having Peter there just make her feel better about it all?
That's the sticking point. Sometimes companionship is worth more than anything. Last year she had Peter and she had Michael. They weren't around her all the time, but just knowing they were there to support her and that she had someone waiting back at the hotel win or lose, that meant something to her. This year she's only had someone twice. In Long Beach on her birthday and then Tobey coming out at Pocono. The rest of her victories she's celebrated alone. And honestly she's hated that.
Thinking about Peter also makes her mind drift to Chris. Chris, who's pretty strongly coming on to her, first with the dinner and now the texts. He hasn't said anything about it when they're in the gym - probably because he knows Peter would hit him if he was even thinking about sleeping with her - but he's interested and she doesn't know how to respond to it. Is there an attraction? Possibly. But she's also known him for the better part of two weeks. And Shelby is not someone who just jumps into bed with somebody. She's not going to get with him if it isn't something real, something that will last longer than September.
All she can hear is the consistent purr of the engine. Steady, unwavering, stable. Like she always tries to be. Racing isn't perfect and there have been some bumps in the road again this season. But she's proven that she can go out there and contend on any day. That's all she wanted, coming back. Consistency. To take away the insecurity that she could only ever be a star once. Anything else that happens now is just a bonus.
She did what she came to do. And she knows, as her eyes lift up to the rear view mirror, that she has two more years of this ahead at least. Two more years left on her contract to keep more nights like these. So wherever she's going, she'd better figure it out.
