"Waiting for that change of season
Oh the winter's been so long
Searching for that rhyme or reason
You've just got to move on
Hold it together, move on
Life's so short, move on
Only time will set you free."
• Move On, George Michael

As the ship pulled away from Saw, Jyn felt the familiar stab of pain in her chest. It was the same one she felt as she watched her Mama and Papa talking to Krennic as a child. The same pain she felt as she witnessed the sight of her Mama's lifeless body, her Papa mourning and cradling the corpse in his arms. It was the same pain she felt as she waited in the bunker, woken up time and again by those infuriating water droplets, threatening to erode her skin and bone away with enough time. It was the same pain she felt when she realized, jolted awake by the sound of the metal hatch being moved, waiting desperately for the familiar melody of her Mama's voice or her Papa calling her Stardust, that both of her parents were gone.

She wanted to shove a blaster down Saw's throat. She wanted to make him feel the pain that she had felt when he left her for dead, abandoned her. She didn't care about his excuses, his pathetic attempts at reasoning. The empty compliments weren't enough to appease her. She wanted nothing more than to strike back at the man who'd spent more time as her father than the man named Galen.

But then there it was: the familiar sound of her Papa's voice that her soul had been aching to hear. Her heart devoured every syllable, every beat, every breath. His face. The face she'd loved to poke and prod and mimic, laughing at the funny ways he could contort his features as he told her stories before bedtime. The face that told her that he loved her. It was there. He was there.

As she looked at the broken man who'd replaced the frightening Saw she'd once known, she saw a pain and devastation akin to what was bleeding through her body. She didn't care about his rationalization or why he had left her behind. She wanted to take him with her. As debris cascaded around them, the urging from Cassian was barely a whisper to her ears. All she could see was the man who had done what he could to protect her, for as long as he could have. She wanted nothing more than to have been gifted all of the might and Force of the galaxy to move his body, so fragile and broken after years and years of battles and wars. She wanted to scoop him up in her arms, effortless and simply.

But she knew that she couldn't.

So did he.

She caught one last glimpse of him as their ship sped away in a fury of desperation and survival.

"Thank you," she whispered to herself. It was all she could say to his disappearing image. "Thank you."
