Portent
n. 1. A sign or warning that something significant is likely to happen; “an occurrence of crucial portent.”
The night before, after the show, Reecy ended up stumbling off the stage double-over in pain. It should have been a warning sign, but it had passed as quickly as it hit. Although she had to miss the Stage Door meet-and-greets, she thought she had just eaten something that didn't agree with her. It wasn't there long enough to have panicked. Getting home, she could only pool enough energy to shower and go to bed. She wasn't feeling the best, and felt like she was coming down with something. The weather had been up and down. That would make sense.
Nothing could have prepared her for what happened. Waking up around four in the morning, there was blood all over her pyjama bottoms and sheets. It felt like a nightmare. It was terrifying. By the time she managed to claw her way through the shock, she grabbed her phone and called the only person who had always been there for her unconditionally: her dad.
Now, she was lying in a warm bed with her dad tucking an extra blanket in around her because she was so cold, it felt like she couldn't get warm enough. Tears were dampening her pillow once again because she was so exhausted, it was all she could manage right now. Sadness, confusion, and a pain unlike she had ever felt before was engulfing her. Her dad had brought her back to his place to stay with him, so he could take care of her. It was in the wake of one of the worst days of her life.
The unexpected pregnancy she never saw coming was over. She had been carrying identical twins inside her, and because there were two, she had already been beginning to show. She had sonogram photos of them, she had just grown to accept this was happening, and she couldn't face another termination. She had started to figure out what life might look like from now on, and was working on ways to accept the decision she had made.
Then it was gone. That day had been terrible. The pain she had experienced was crippling, and they had struggled to get the bleeding to stop. They couldn't be sure if the babies had died prior to that morning, or if it had been a spontaneous miscarriage for no reason. It wasn't just the pain and bleeding. She was hit with an onslaught of terrible affects of what was happening. She had never been more glad her dad was a doctor. He never left her side and oversaw the whole process. She had been too sick and in too much pain to manage herself.
They let her go home late that night. She was so weakened, they had to take her to the car in a wheelchair. As soon as they got back to her dad's place, he carried her to bed. Now he sat with her, gently stroking her hair and every now and then, reminding her he loved her and he was there for whatever she needed. She didn't know what she needed. It felt like her world had just bottomed out from under her when she didn't even have all her ducks in the row with this to start with.
Her emotions were messed up. Again, she found herself dissolving into a wave of sobbing. It was like her mind and heart couldn't figure out what her body had just done to her. Why had it betrayed her like this? She was so sure she was going to get it right this time. Now she was in terrible pain, ill, and feeling more empty than she had in her entire life.
