042.3. Drabble

"I Will Survive"

Beau hadn’t said much that morning. His appointment at the hospital had been for 8.30am, but he hadn’t managed to sleep at all the night before. When the alarm on Austin’s phone went off, Beau was still lying there in the bed with the covers half kicked off him staring at the ceiling. Austin had rolled over and gently cuddled him, kissing his cheek and asking if he was okay. Beau had just nodded, but didn’t say anything. That morning, he just didn’t feel like talking and everyone seemed to understand that.

There was just something innately shit about being a patient in the unit you were supposed to be a doctor in. Austin was there with him, holding his hand, and Angel. Angel was there to help Austin keep it together, and Beau was okay with that. His parents and brothers had wanted to come too, but it was protocol that no more than three people could be with patients for the first day with extra monitoring going on. It didn’t stop his family coming and preparing to sit in the waiting room, though.

Now he was sitting here in the recliner, dressed in a loose pair of track pants and a hospital gown with one of the oncology nurses sitting on a stool beside him. His eyes were down-turned to his lap while she inserted a cannula into his hand to start running a bag of IV fluids for him. The central line was already inserted just below his collar bone and he watched as she connected IV chemotherapy tube to it. A couple of beeps and the IV machine was started. He just looked away mutely and took the lemon freezer pop Austin was offering him, shoving it into his mouth.

And so it started...
