054.5. Misc prompt

Hold my hand

Euan couldn't believe what the last three months of his like had been like. Things had happened that he could never in a million years have really known how to cope with. He had survived through an epic load of shit in his life, but these last few months had really began to make him feel like he was getting old. But it was okay. The rocking boat beneath them seemed to finding its even keel again, and things were settling down. His son was out of hospital, albeit still spotty and poorly, but nothing that resting in bed, calamine lotion and a good amount of TLC wouldn't fix. Noah's condition was gradually improving and once his medication was sorted out, he would be released into Euan's care. As for Euan himself, he was regaining a lot of strength in physical therapy and even though it was tough going and some days almost broke him, he was determined to get back on his feet sooner rather than later.

Then the curve ball. The curve ball that shocked the shit out of him and made him feel like he was somewhat having an odd out-of-body experience. It was a curve ball that would have initiated at a time where he felt like his grip on everything was barely hanging on by a sliver, and he had a lapse in concentration. His mind had been in about eight different places, all as equally stressful as the next. It had just been comfort sex. He and Jules weren't even together at the time. It was what started it all. She showed up on his doorstep and told him she wanted to be the one he was distracted with. They slept together, and it was sex unlike any he had ever had.

Comfort sex really wasn't something he had been familiar with at all. Once it was initiated, he experienced why it was such a deep thing for people. Neither of them had been thinking, and now it seemed they made a pretty critical error getting caught up in the moment, in the emotions of it all. After procrastinating and deciding to sleep on it - or not sleep, as was the case - Julie woke up that morning and decided she didn't want to take the home pregnancy test, and instead called in a favour of a family friend, Haley Jackson, who was an obstetrician at the hospital. Euan got his sister to come over and take care of Ciaran, and he and Julie went to the hospital together.

It was all as weird as fuck for Euan. Surreal. He was in the obstetric clinic, surrounded by pregnant women and pictures of babies on the walls with diagrams of wombs and parts of a women he never really wanted to know or see in a technical sense. They had been sitting together in the waiting room when Julie had grabbed his hand, holding it so tightly his fingers went white and the Celtic ring on his right hand pressed painfully against his finger. She was scared, and who could blame her? This was one of those life-changing moments. It had just all began to feel really, really real when Julie had been sick that morning, only narrowly avoiding throwing up all over Euan in bed when he had been spooning her in his sleep.

Crunch time was here now, and they were in a darkened room of the clinic, the ultrasound suite. In just a few moments, they were going to find out and see for themselves on the screen if they were expecting or not. Once again, Euan was holding Julie's hand as she laid there on the narrow bed with her shirt pulled up and Haley was squirting some blue sticky gel on her stomach, and the fingers of his other hand were drumming anxiously on his thigh while he waited.

There was a hell of a lot going through his mind right now. The good, the bad, and the ugly. There was one thing to be talking about maybe one day considering this as a possibility, and for it to actually be happening. How the fuck had he gone from hardarse recovering addict cop who drank, smoked, swore and fucked too much to this? A soon-to-be husband in love, a father, and maybe another wee one on the way? A family man who would die to protect his family, and who had turned such a big corner on his life that he had almost slipped and come a full circle when he fell off the wagon? Stress was his enemy, which was why he couldn't let this be a bad thing, no matter what happened.

Haley and Jules were chatting quietly together, Haley having this sweet way of calming speech, a little joking, friendly smiles. Jules was lamenting feeling like a reckless teenager who forgot the condom and joking about having to get both of them classes in diapering. Euan was quiet the whole time, half of his mind in its own world, and the other half swishing over and over like a washing machine. His thumb was stroking rhythmically back and forth over Julie's knuckles while he waited, and then suddenly Julie was tugging on his hand with a soft, "Eu..."

It got his attention and he blinked out of reverie, realising he hadn't just been a million miles away, but a million different places too. He looked at her expectantly, wondering what it was she needed, and realised both woman were looking at him. "That's Number Two, daddy. Congratulations," Haley told him with a soft smile, pointing at the screen. This was a moment Euan would never forgot for the rest of his life, when his eyes quickly shifted to the screen where she was pointing. He had taken to being a father like a duck to water after the initial shock and fear he would seriously suck as a father. But all this, he missed out on with Ciaran and no one would ever have been able to really tell him what this would feel like.

This was actually happening. Julie was pregnant with his baby, and there it was on the screen. Really small, and not really looking anything remotely like a baby yet, but it didn't have to. He put his hand up to his mouth and he was tearing up, a mix of emotions coming hard and fast. Julie was staring at the screen in utter disbelief, her hand still securely enclosed his his other. Euan couldn't speak, and even if he might deny it when asked later, tears escaped and slipped down his cheeks. Staring at the image on the screen, it hit him that they were actually having another baby, and this time, he was there right from the start and didn't want to miss a thing.
