Prompt #86.6c: In Memoriam.

[ooc: Takes place sometime before this. Includes a character introduced canonically in series 7, and references a character death discussed canonically during series 6. ]

For The Doctor, it had only been a year, at most. But to everyone she had left behind, it had been nearly five. A year of her running around the past and future, wreaking havoc, saving lives, having ridiculous adventures. But it had been five long years for everyone else, everyone who was taking the slow path.

And a lot had changed in that five years.

Or so Kate Stewart had told her upon their first meeting.

She'd told her of many things, including the marriage of Martha Jones and Mickey Smith. But there was one thing she'd left out until the Doctor had asked.

"So you're the Brigadier's little girl. My, how you've grown. How's my old mate doing?"

That's all it had taken for the blonde to whip around and shoot a look at her. A look that was somewhere between anger and sadness.

"My father passed away last Spring, Doctor. If you had made contact before now, you'd have known that." The Doctor's face fell, and Kate continued. "He died in a nursing home, Doctor. He was always telling stories about you, and wishing you would come back, to take him on one last adventure. He spoke of you practically until the moment he died. One of his final wishes was for the nurse to leave a glass of brandy at his bedside, just in case you returned. You never did."

The news had hit the Doctor hard, but she had refused to cry, at least not in front of his daughter.

It was only after she had left UNIT that she'd let it really sink in. Only after she entered the cemetery.

The grave hadn't been hard to find.

She slowly kneeled in front of the marker, placing her hand over the raised letters on his tombstone.

It was only then that The Doctor cried.

"Oh, old friend... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Not long later, The Doctor was gone, and left in her place, on the gravestone, was a single pink flower. It was the Schlenk Blossom, which, like The Doctor herself, was also the last of its kind.
