TRIGGER WARNING, GRAPHIC VIOLENCE

By the time Julie disappeared well out of sight, Euan was feeling like he needed to punch someone or something just because confusion and frustration were thrumming through him and he needed an outlet. His history declared that his outlets usually weren’t the best choices. He still had a child in the hospital he had to think about, and no matter how much he just wanted to react and try to bleed the anger out of him in some way, all the outcomes would probably be disastrous.

He couldn’t head back to the hospital immediately... )

SHAME

It was way too early to be at work, but Annalise had been there for hours already. From the hospital to here, in some shameful attempt at holding off an avalanche of shit that was already starting hit. There had been no time to batten down the hatches. It had come completely out of the blue.

She was standing in her office feeling numb all over, save for her head that was pounding so much it felt like it was going to explode. The morning papers were already out, and they already had the information. She hadn’t even held any press interview yet, and had staff staving off phone calls since the early hours of the morning. Shakily, she picked up the morning paper that had just been delivered to her office, and she put her hand over her mouth when the headline screamed back at her.

NYPD DETECTIVE SHOT IN CENTRAL PARK

She didn’t know why she was feeling like she was, like a failure as a Lieutenant. Maybe it boiled down to the fact that if she hadn’t taken the job, and he had, they wouldn’t be in this horrific nightmare right now. She didn’t want to cry. She really didn’t want to. But she managed to slam her office door shut and pull the blinds closed before it hit. How was she going to pull it together and keep a professional front when the blood of one of her own was dripping from her hands right now?
