Hospital
I've been lucky in that I haven't often been a patient in a hospital. I'm much more likely to be there because someone I know, or someone they know, is the patient. Aside from the absence of physical pain, I'm not sure that's any better.
I'm probably the worst 'patient's friend' ever. Not that I get hysterical or anything, but I worry constantly. I'm that guy you find in the hallway, nursing the same cup of coffee for an hour, staring at the opposite wall. Sometimes I feel like I'm more uncomfortable than the people actually undergoing the procedure. Which isn't helpful when I'm the listed 'In Case of Emergency' contact for six different people.
But I've spent too much time in hospital hallways over the last decade. There was having to have the bullet dug out of Jason Harmon's arm on his third day as a detective. Standing in the ER while a wounded Kevin Spencer told me he was an officer of MI5. And those months I spent waiting for Brendan to come out of his coma, helping him through his recovery after the car accident. How many times I worried that he'd never wake up.
Not to say anything bad about hospitals. One of my friends is Head of Diagnostics at a hospital here in New Jersey, and I'll be thanking that nurse that looked out for Brendan for probably the rest of my life. A lot of amazing people work in hospitals. I'm just not that good in them.
I'm very happy that I've remained in one piece for as long as I have. I just wish that I could say the same about everyone else in my life.
