"We fear violence less than our own feelings. Personal, private, solitary pain is more terrifying than what anyone else can inflict." - Jim Morrison
Karla hadn’t been on a date in so long she couldn’t exactly remember how it was supposed to go, and the last time she had been on one, it had been a whole different world. One where she wasn’t a mom or yet a doctor, and where she was young and carefree and hadn’t faced her whole life falling apart around her in the wake of a painful and violent attack. It had been long before Richie, before the fateful trip to New Orleans that had changed her whole life… both for the worse in what had happened, and for the better in the resulting birth of her precious son, who’d given her life meaning again when she’d thought it impossible.
Right now, however, she was questioning everything, including how precious said son was, when he was standing in front of her giving her an impeccable bitch please face. “Mom, you’re going,” he said, in his best no nonsense doctor tone… something he’d learned from her, which made it not altogether impressive. “You’ve been excited about this ever since he asked you, and you can’t just stand the poor guy up. I mean, he’s gonna be wondering what he did wrong to put you off, and that’s not really fair, right? If you don’t go out with him, you at least owe him an explanation for why you said yes, and then changed your mind.”
She shot a pointed glare at her son, but he wasn’t backing down here and it was just a moment before she protested again. “It’s too soon,” she finally said. “I mean, he seems like a great guy, and I’m loving getting to know him, but I still don’t know him all that well, and maybe I’m pushing it too hard? Going too fast with it? I mean, we’ve only known each other a few weeks now.”
Richie’s face softened as he sat down next to her and put his arm around her shoulder gently. “Mama,” he said softly, resting his head on her shoulder after kissing her cheek. “He’s friends with a lot of people we know. He’s a really good guy. Everyone says so. I mean, a little scary if he thinks Julian isn’t getting the care he needs, but… he’s a dad. A good one. Just like you’re a good mom and you’d go epic raging bitch mom on any doctor who wasn’t giving me the best possible care. My point being… Mom, you’re allowed to be happy. I know what happened to you is probably the worst thing anyone could ever have happen to them, but you didn’t let that bastard steal your life. You still became a doctor. A damn good one, too. And an amazing mom. This guy could be really good for you… or at the very least, a really good friend. So don’t back out of it now. You owe yourself at least the chance to try it out. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t, but it won’t be because you didn’t try.”
Karla opened her mouth to protest again, but Richie shook his head. He was having none of that. “Mama, you’re already dressed. You look amazing. He’s sending his driver to freaking pick you up. You guys planned this out, and you’re going. You need to go.” Before Karla could even formulate a response, the driver was at the door, and her son was taking her arm to escort her. Despite how nervous she felt, there was an overwhelming sense of comfort in knowing that her son was there and loved and supported her both in this and every step of the way, and as she stood at the door, the curly haired angel she had carried inside her for 9 months kissing her gently on the cheek and giving her a big hug, Karla couldn’t help tearing up. It had all come full circle. She had given him his life… and now he was making sure that she was living hers. Karla didn’t believe in God… she wasn’t religious by any stretch of the imagination. But what she did believe in was this gorgeous young man she had raised, and he was telling her to live… and live she damn well would.
