Winter
When Naomi had left her apartment in Santa Monica, the weather had been warm and sunny. She hadn't at all been prepared for the New York winter, and her first stop had been at the ever-popular Macy's to find and buy a winter coat and a pair of boots. For the time being, they'd have to work with her skinny jeans and t-shirt, because she didn't have time for a full on shopping session. Los Angeles didn't really lend itself to dressing well for a New York winter. But that would come later, she supposed. She would survive for now, and shop later. Her first goal in coming here... her only goal, really, was to find out why her dad hadn't been buried in Savannah... and if maybe her suspicion that Zoran wasn't quite so dead could be true.
Her mother had told her she was out of her mind, and Nora had agreed. Zoran was dead, they all knew it to be true. But there was no body, and Naomi had never quite let herself accept that her brother was dead. If he was dead, why couldn't the fucking police at least show them the body or even give them the details of his death. It was a suicide. That was all they had said. A suicide with no body. An empty grave with nothing left of her beautiful baby brother but his name and two dates. Naomi wasn't buying that. She couldn't, as much as everyone told her it was true.
Maybe that was why she'd come here. Maybe she thought somehow, deep down, that she was going to find her brother in New York. And maybe that was literally fucking insane. But she was here, determined to find her dad's grave and if nothing else, to get some sort of closure about her brother, too. Though if she were being honest, a part of her didn't want to find out for sure that Zoran was dead. Maybe it wasn't healthy, but she never wanted to fully believe that her brother was dead.
It hadn't been too difficult to find the information about her dad's burial location, but when she'd arrived at the cemetery, she hadn't quite been able to make herself walk over to where her father was buried. She found herself sitting on a bench at the outside edge of the cemetery, watching a light snow fall. She was shivering against the cold, but she couldn't leave until she'd visited her father's grave.
And she couldn't make herself walk over. Not yet.
