“And in that moment, like a swift intake of breath, the rain came.” - Other Voices, Other Rooms
"Oh my god, Sash, you were incredible! I can't believe you did it. You were amazing. I knew you could do it, you just needed someone who could help you believe. You found him. Still not quite sure how you pulled that one off, bitch, but I have to say, I approve of your taste in men. Love every minute, Sash. Laugh a lot. Hold his hand. Smile as much as you can. Life's too short. I love you, boyfriend. More than you will ever know. To the moon and back doesn't even cut it. Never stop being you."
Sasha was stood outside the Christmas concert after party. He had his finger in one ear to block out all the background noise coming from inside while he stood out on the balcony freezing his ass off listening to Andrea's voicemail. She had called him shortly after he had gone on stage with Justin to sing back-up with him for Silent Night. He had been with Maryanne, so that helped. The stage fright hadn't stayed at bay, but he got there in the end.
It had been a complete mindfuck, yet an adrenaline rush. Of course, he was already pumped with adrenaline from the exertion of throwing up three times in a row backstage every time he thought about what he was about to do. It wasn't like all the attention would be on him. It would be on Justin, but it was still a mean feat for Sasha to face. But he did it, and somewhere in the crazy mentalness of backstage, Andrea had called him up and he hadn't heard his phone ring. She left a message, and in the whirlwind of crazy, he hadn't even thought to check his phone until now.
He had seen the message left, so he excused himself from the party to go listen to it. He smiled, listening to her sweet words. They were so Andi. He had done all this for her, and he still couldn't believe he had actually managed to pull it off. Finding her number at the top of his recent calls list, he tried to call her back. Only, her phone went straight to voicemail. He left her a brief message, telling her to call him back. He hiked the volume on his phone right up so he wouldn't miss it.
It was just as he was about to put it back in his pocket that it started to ring, You're My Best Friend by Queen being the ringtone he had set for Andi. "Hey, you. I survived the ordeal and lived to tell the tale!" he declared down the phone.
Only, it wasn't Andi calling him.
Sasha stood out there alone on the balcony with the phone to his ear. His bright smile fell, and the colour drained from his face as he listened. "Sasha, sweetheart... Andi's gone. She passed away in her sleep about twenty minutes ago."
Tears flooded Sasha's eyes. "No," he choked out, shaking his head when the tears spilled over his cheeks. "No, no, no, no!" he was soon screaming into the phone, shaking his head. This wasn't happening, she had months to go yet. It wasn't supposed to happen like this. He was supposed to be with her. He promised her over and over again that he would be there for her when the time came, and he had failed.
He completely broke down, falling to his knees and clutching the phone up to his face as if it could somehow compensate for him not being there for her to hold her through the final horrible path of this journey she never deserved. There, sobbing his heart out on the balcony of what was supposed to be a celebratory party, he soon felt arms wrap around him to hold him. He dropped his phone, the call still connected, and it scattered somewhere across the smooth marble floor. His hand gripped Justin's arm as he clung to him for dear life.
Time had run out. It was over. And he never got to say goodbye.
