quote of the day 005.

"A real friend steps in when the rest of the world steps out."
- Unknown

Paxton did something he hadn't done in ages - called in sick to work. He wasn't quite sure what the process was if a model was out sick, but he had more important things to worry about. When he went to visit Trent, he lost complete track of time. It had been a nice and relaxing evening. They talked, a lot, about many things, and it was easy to forget about the world beyond those walls for just a little while.

What he didn't plan on, was falling asleep beside Trent on his bed, and not waking up until late morning the next day. He woke up to countless missed calls and texts, so many that he knew just looking at his screen that something had happened. The look on his face must have said it all, because Trent was immediately asking if he was okay, and what was wrong. Paxton didn't have any answers for him. He could piece together that something happened with Liam, but most of the messages just boiled down to urgent pleas for him to call, or demanding to know where he was.

He apologised profusely to Trent for both falling asleep when they had been spending time together and needing to run off as soon as he woke up. But Trent was sweet, and Paxton felt this odd sensation inside, like he was being torn here. The bottom line was, Trent was okay, and Liam probably wasn't. He had to get to Liam straight away to find out what the hell happened and if his best friend was okay. Without even thinking about it, he had stooped to give Trent a goodbye kiss, and then rushed out after putting his coat on inside out.

Finally, he did get hold of Miles, who told him that he was with Liam, but he had to go. Miles sounded panicked and miserable, and he was waiting for Paxton out on the sidewalk of the apartment block where he used to live with Liam. Now, Paxton lived there, and Miles had moved in with his partner, Rhys. It was there out in the cold that Miles spilled the entire horrible mess that happened with Liam while Paxton had been spending time with Trent. Paxton felt like he was going to pee his pants when he heard Liam tried to go to a gay bar. That was never going to end well. It couldn't. Liam wasn't mentally strong enough for it, but apparently he had desperately wanted to try.

Paxton made Miles some quick promises that he would take care of Liam, and then Miles had to go. Paxton stopped him briefly, asking if he was okay. Miles just said it wouldn't be if he didn't leave, and it was a long story. He had that right. There was going to be nothing about this whole thing that was simple. All that mattered now was just making sure Liam was okay. At least, as okay as it could possibly be, which might not be okay at all, but simply being alive was sometimes the meanest fest people could manage. Paxton knew that was especially so for Liam. He had been through some terrible things, and he was still hurting. He may always hurt, and he may never be completely okay.

He bolted up the stairs then, not even bothering to wait for the elevator, that was as slow as a wet week at the best of times. He dropped his keys three times before he got them into the lock of their apartment. He shed his coat and dropped it in the hall, and hurried through the Liam's room. "Li? Babe, it's me. I'm here," he told quietly.

Liam was lying in his bed, curled up in a ball on his side. His bedside lamp was on low, and the closer Paxton got to him, he could see the bruising all over Liam's face and his black eye. "Fuck," he murmured and leaned over to kiss Liam's head. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here. I'm here now. What do you need? Tell me what you need, I'm here..." he promised, stroking Liam's hair with one hand and rubbed his back with the other.

"A hug?" Liam requested in a tiny, weak voice.

Paxton nodded, already kicking off his shoes and nudging them under the bed with his toe. "I can do that," he murmured and climbed into the bed with Liam. He cuddled up close and wrapped his arms around him. He wasn't quite sure who started to cry first, but they weren't far off each other. Liam, probably because he felt like he would never vanquish the demons he battled and he suffered another terrible blow. Paxton, because he felt helpless knowing there was nothing he could do to take them away for him.

Whatever happened, Liam would always be one of the most important people in his life, and he hoped one day he could be happy and free again.
