"A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves – a special kind of double." - Unknown

Life was full of difficult choices. For Amarlie, she had been putting off making this one in particular, hoping her gut instinct might be proven wrong. Once it was made, though, she knew she couldn't cope with it any other way but to just do it and not talk herself out of it. She knew if she had to say goodbye to Justin, it would tear her apart. She didn't want to say goodbye. It was why she just bought the one-way plane ticket, packed, and got in a cab to go to the airport alone.

But her brother was headstrong. Not because he was stubborn, but because he was determined. When he felt something, he felt it with passion. Apparently letting Amarlie go home without seeing her was one of those things. She had figured they were in the age of Skype, so it wouldn't be as hard to go. It was, though. Handing the ticket over to check in, it was an internal struggle to let it go so the attendant could check her bags.

At the gate, she was sitting tense and stiff in the seat waiting for the boarding call. Emotions were getting the better of her, but the homesickess she had been left feeling was outweighing just about all other things bar one... that she didn't want to face Justin to say goodbye to him. She hadn't anticipated the impact he would have on her life in such a short space of time. It was a special thing for her how well she had connected with him and Sasha. It had begun to feel like they were a part of her that now belonged there. But she had to go home. Nothing else was turning out how she hoped. Her biological mother was a stranger to her. She wasn't going to sit around and wait for anything to happen. She waited long enough.

"Amarlie!"

She looked up, and Justin was running up the airport corridor. It was a long way from the gates to the lounge. How did he get through without a ticket? She shot out of her seat, ready to tell him to go back home out of the cold to take care of Sasha, and to remind him that airports were the last place he needed to be after what happened before. There was no time for words before Justin reached her and threw his arms around her in a hug, bursting into tears.

Shit. There was no stopping her doing the same thing now. "I'm sorry!" she sobbed against his shoulder, hugging him back with as much force as she allowed herself, remembering he recently had broken ribs. "You need to be back home with Sash."

"I will, once you go," Justin told her tearfully.

Neither released hug. Then the boarding call was coming out the speakers and another sob caught in Amarlie's throat. She didn't want to let go of him. How had someone managed to become so special and important to her in such a short space of time? She cared about him, she worried about him, and it was already impossible to imagine just leaving and life feeling the way it did before.

Justin pulled back a little to take her hands, holding them so tight, his fingers were squeezed around hers. "Call me to tell me you got home safely, okay? It doesn't matter what time it is.

Amarlie nodded, though her vision was blurring from the tears welled up in her eyes. The fact Justin was crying too made this so much more harder. It was this she had been trying to avoid. "We'll Skype. I want to know when you make it back to work, and how Sasha goes with the moving and starting school here. Maybe you guys can come visit for spring break? I'm so sorry," she said with another broken sob.

Justin just hugged her again, and a messy line had already formed to board the plane as the second call came over. He was sniffling, trying to wipe away the tears that were still falling.

Amarlie kissed his cheek, and rubbed his back. "I love you, okay? You're the best brother a girl could ever hope for, and we're still going to talk every single day. Give Sasha and Dory hugs for me." She took his hand, giving it a squeeze. Then she had to break away to try to push beyond that solid cold lump of emotion that was sitting heavily in her gut. She told herself not to look back when she moved to the end of the line and showed her boarding pass.

But once she was beyond the gate, she couldn't stop herself. She looked back, and Justin had moved to lean up against the wall, both hands up over his face, still in tears. There was a loud voice screaming in her head to go back to him, but she didn't. She just broke down into more sobs as she walked up the tube to the plane and stepped aboard.
