Life
Being a doctor in an Emergency Room was hard on any general day, but it was always that much more difficult when someone you knew showed up in your resus bay. It had been a crazy night and Riley had been run off his feet. He was at the tail end of his shift when the MVA was called ahead as being three minutes out. It was the third car crash of the night and by this point, he was running on adrenaline. He was tugging on some fresh gloves when the paramedics rushed their patient through the bustling corridors of the ER, Riley running along by the gurney with them as they started to give him handover.
‘Emilio Alvarez, twenty five year old male...’ Riley found himself doing a double-take at the paramedic hearing the name. He knew the patient. It was Destina’s older brother. He knew Des since she started working at the hospital, often her patients ending up there with ODs. Emilio was in a really bad way. Severe head injury, blood loss, suspected multiple fractures, and probably internal injuries. He had been trapped in the car and only been removed with aid of the jaws of life. Blood was everywhere, neck brace in-situ...
He was taking it all in, but they wouldn’t know the full extent of his injuries or prognosis until they could stabilise him. He also didn’t have any time to linger on the fact he was going to have to tell Destina his brother’s life was hanging in the balance. Emilio flatlined and Riley had to lead up the resus, barking orders at the crash team at the ready. This wasn’t good, and he hoped and prayed like hell that the call he made to Destina wasn’t to tell her that her brother hadn’t made it.
