090.2. Muse Prompt (Quotes)

"Passion is the quickest to develop, and the quickest to fade. Intimacy develops more slowly, and commitment more gradually still." - Robert Sternberg

Lincoln didn't know when it happened. He never expected the fuck buddies dynamic to ever change. An arrangement like that was a sturdy foundation. You knew where you stood and it was a sure thing. You didn't have to worry about things like love, romance, getting a relationship right, knowing how not to fuck it up. He had witnessed those things with other people and he had never gotten to the point where he was sure it looked like something he wanted to bother with.

Now all of a sudden, in the wake of a hell of a lot of shit that hit people he loved around him, he was looking at things in a skewed way well out of his comfort zone. He hadn't wanted this to happen. He didn't like shit that was complicated. He was a live for the moment kind of guy. It was how his career path was mapped, just by jumping in head first into shit and seeing how it all came about.

Sitting out on the front steps of his apartment block, indulging in a cigarette, he was re-read over a series of texts that had been continual for the last couple of days. There was nothing out of the ordinary per se. It was the fact he didn't want the conversation to end that was niggling away inside his gut making him think things he didn't understand. There had never been a text conversation that went this long and about everything and anything with this person. In fact, their texts usually just comprised of varying constructions of 'Wanna fuck?', 'Yeah, where are you?', 'Home. See u in 10?', 'Have the lube ready, bitch'.

He shut his phone screen back into darkness and shoved it into the pocket of his hoodie, going back to his cigarette while he analysed the architecture of the building across the street. Don't fuck buddy arrangements that start to morph into something else always end up complicated and crappy? That was always how the story went in stupid romcom movies. The chick always gets the dude in the end, though. In some stupid chain of random events you're supposed to believe as fate or some shit. Real life didn't work like that. Real life always had a way of complicating shit just when you thought you had a handle on it.

Dropping the spent smoke onto the step below, he stamped it out with his foot and got up with a sigh to head back inside. Jerking off in the shower and then bed sounded like a really good idea right now. He didn't like to be a deep thinker. It always left him moody and broody, which would inevitably lead to someone calling him out on shit. Everyone had so much going on right now. With this, he had to be a solo flyer.
