090.1. Muse Prompts (Lyrics)

"This is how the story went
I met someone by accident
Who blew me away
Blew me away
And It was in the darkest of my days
When you took my sorrow and you took my pain
And buried them away, buried them away."

• Hiding My Heart, Adele

Having a sick partner is challenge enough for anyone. Though, it wasn’t something Jace ever envisaged he would have. This was purely for the fact he was clinically disabled himself as a result of a brain injury when he was child. He was always the sick one, the one getting taken care of, the one being poked, prodded, wrapped up in cotton wool. That frustrated him sometimes, when he got older and started yearning for more independence. Everything changed when he met the love of his life in, of all places, the neurologist’s waiting room.

He liked to think they were kindred spirits, put in the same place at the same time, lamenting the same challenges. Before that, Jace had never been in love. The relationships he attempted ended miserably when the boyfriends ultimately couldn’t handle his condition. The thought of someone potentially having an epileptic fit in the middle of sex was seriously off-putting… for most.

Not for Jesse. Not even remotely, because he was epileptic himself. He understood, and he never judged. In fact, Jace still remembered the day they met and logging somewhere in the functioning part of his brain how Jesse’s smile lit up the room, with dimples that made warm and fuzzy things happen to certain parts of Jace’s anatomy, and for the first time in a long time, he could share the struggles of a chronic illness with someone who got it. Who didn’t yearn for someone who just got it, got the challenges and heartache you faced almost daily?

Of course, the stark reality was that there would be times that Jesse was the one rendered incapacitated and that was hard for Jace. He wanted to take care of Jesse single-handedly, but he couldn’t. Not when he couldn’t even care for himself on his own. This time Jace had to call an ambulance when Jesse was having a seizure that lapsed over into the safe timeframe. The second in as many days too, so it was better to be safe than sorry. Jesse was in good hands, admitted under Evan, so that was even better. He was completely out of it, with the IV medication doing its thing. Jace was restless and had been pacing a little while the doctors and nurses did their thing getting Jesse settled. He was really protective of Jesse, but he had to pull his head in and not let his frustration impede on the staff doing their job to help Jesse.

This was Jesse’s first time in hospital since they had been married. The first time Jace was listed officially as Jesse’s husband and next-of-kin on his medical records, and had the authority over any decisions while Jesse wasn’t conscious, or barely conscious. There was something incredibly relieving that he could have that put down in black and white, making it feel just that tiny bit more official. Not that it didn’t already, because they had their marriage certificate framed on their wall surrounded by many amazing shots from their special day. Married two months now, and the sensation of his wedding ring nestled up against his engagement ring had gotten familiar, and he loved those sleepy mornings spooned up together in bed, holding hands with their fingers laced together and feeling Jesse’s wedding ring too.

Time to set in patiently and wait for Jesse to start to feel better. Could be hours, would more likely be days, or possibly even longer. Jace gently tucked the blankets in around Jesse’s chest and then cupped his cheek to press a soft kiss to his forehead. His thumb brushed the light stubble starting with Jesse forgoing a shave the last couple of days with not feeling so hot. He managed to get his bum perched relatively comfortably on the side of the bed so he could sit with him for a little while. One thing Jace was gifted with through the recuperation of the accident was patient. He had been through so much in his life that were open-ended timeframes that he didn’t care how long he had to wait.

Now the waiting was for his husband to get back on his feet. It was hard, but he was still content deep down inside even if he was restless with worry when Jesse was sick. Married two months now, things had been happy. Sure, they knew the meaning of ‘in sickness and in health’ more than many couples, but if there was such a thing as soul mates in this universe, he was pretty sure he lucked out and found his. After all the pain, suffering, loneliness, and heartache, now he had something that made it all worth it.

When a numb ass began to set in, he carefully moved and laid down on the hospital bed tucked in at Jesse’s side. Just like every morning since they had gotten married, he linked his fingers in with Jesse’s and looked at their wedding rings and the way Jesse’s hand fit perfectly in his. It was hard, but they would be okay. Just like they always were.
