092.1. Muse Prompt (Lyrics)

"And I feel like some bird of paradise
My bad fortune slipping away
And I feel the innocence of a child
Everybody's got something good to say
Things I once thought unbelievable
In my life
Have all taken place."

• Good Fortune, PJ Harvey

If there was only one successful thing that came out of that afternoon was Lorenzo confirming he hadn’t missed his calling as an Interior Decorator and really should stick to floristry. There seemed to be more pastel pink and lemon paint all over him and the splash mats than there was on the walls and now he was standing there looking at his handiwork cynically, paint roller in hand. He wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his forearm, only succeeding in smearing more lemon paint above his left eye and into his hair. “... I don’t think I like it. It’s all fucking streaky.”

“You missed a spot,” Lewis teased.

The snicker of amusement from behind him had him turning around to shoot his boyfriend bitch look accompanied by flipping him a playful bird. “You alright there, babe? Just sitting there watching the freak show play out,” he threw back with an amused snort. Lewis was sitting in the brand new white handcrafted rocking chair they got for Holly’s nursery. It was something he always wanted, maybe because whenever you saw beautiful nurseries for babies, they had these rocking chairs in them. Like it made it all real.

Holly was nursed in his arms, her big blue eyes watching Lorenzo across the room while her little hands were playing with the silver and leather cuff on his wrist. He had her wrapped in her pink receiving blanket that she had kicked her feet out from under, for about the tenth time since he came through to feed her her bottle. Lewis had worked in vain to get them recovered each time, but she wasn’t having a bar of it. Lorenzo hoped she wasn’t going to grow up into one of those toddlers who liked to strip and do nudie runs through the house of the most inconvenient moments.

“I’m helping. Call it creative advising. And I advise that there’s nothing wrong with it, love. You’ve been at it most of the day and now the sun’s gone down. It’s the light that’s making it look streaky. If you put any more coats on, it’s practically going to be a padded cell. I would also like to creatively advise that your ass looks exceptional in those track pants and if I didn’t think you were about to keel over in exhaustion, I’d be expecting you to bend over that paint bucket for the rest of the night,” Lewis offered, smirking at his lover.

“Hey, no talking about bending me over anything until you’re capable of following through on it, bitch,” Lorenzo said with a point in Lewis’ direction with the roller. He put it down in the tray and went over to Lewis, and before he could protest, grabbed his face and planted a huge kiss on his lips. His fingers left smears of paint over Lewis’ face and he gave one of Holly’s feet a soft tickle. “I just want it perfect for her. Do you think the design’s okay? This is way harder than I fucking thought it would be. Ever since I knew I was having a little girl, I wanted her to have a pink and yellow nursery, but now I don’t know…”

The beautiful crib that matched the rocking chair was already assembled and pulled into the middle of the room with some sheet draped over it. Lorenzo hadn’t been able to wait to construct it. “Here, take her, love. Sit in the chair with her,” Lewis instructed, and discovered that getting in the rocking chair was much easier than getting out of it with injuries that were still healing. He only just managed it without tipping it forward and faceplanting the ground.

Lorenzo had one arm securely nursing his daughter, and the other helping Lewis so he didn’t become nursery roadkill. He was watching curiously, and obediently sat in the rocking chair with his little girl in his arms. Lewis disrobed the crib and let the sheets fall onto the floor around it and then he switched on the beautiful illuminated mobile with fairies and butterflies that played Brahms Lullaby. He switched the overhead light off and the room was left with just the dim and relaxing mobile light with the soft music playing.

Falling quiet, Lorenzo listened to the music and looked around the room. There were no streaking walls, no over-analyzing his not-so-expert paintwork, no second-guessing what he had always wanted for his daughter since knowing she existed. He was so lost in the atmosphere of it that he hadn’t even noticed Lewis had come back and then his arms were draping around Lorenzo’s shoulders with a tender kiss to his cheek. “See?” Lewis murmured pointedly. “And look how her eyes look in this light.”

There was no doubt Lorenzo was nearly tearing up here. After everything, this felt like he had turned a corner. He had a beautiful lover and together they were giving Holly this beautiful space of her own. It wasn’t the moon and the stars like every daddy would want to give their baby daughter, but it was pretty damn close. Holly’s eyes were shining in the soft light and she was looking over at the mobile, mesmerized by the light and music. “It’s perfect...” Lorenzo realised.

“Don’t second-guess your choices for her, love. You’re doing everything right,” Lewis assured him.

Lorenzo looked up at Lewis with a sheepish smile. “I really needed to hear that,” he admitted, rested his head against Lewis’ when he looked back at the mobile Holly was still watching and making those cute little contented baby noises.

“Then lucky I survived my brush with death and I’m going to be here to remind you whenever you need to hear it,” Lewis promised.
