"Sometimes life is gonna hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith." - Steve Jobs
Once Sally's job was based in the City, there was an executive family decision that she, instead of their parents, would be listed as Zed's in-cast-of-emergency contact. Brett was currently living with their grandparents in Boston while he finished college, having decided to take a couple of years out to travel before starting. That was where the family had been during the week, Sally included, for their grandparents 40th wedding anniversary. Though, Zed had been doing his elusive/evasive routine the last couple of weeks so no one pushed him to come along. Sometimes, he just needed space.
By some sheer stroke of luck, Sally had come home from Boston early. She had to finish a presentation on their pilot project that would be presented to a load of physicians interested in adopting the program in the future in other cities around the country. So, she was home when the phone call came through that alerted her that Zed had attempted suicide and was in hospital awaiting surgery.
Her blood had run cold. Not just because it was horrifying news, but because this wasn't the first time this sort of thing had touched her life, and no one had been remotely aware Zed was suicidal. She felt sick. In fact, she nearly threw up outside the hospital when she got out of the cab, but luckily she managed to claw back control over her emotions because she knew she would need to keep her shit together for Zed.
She was on auto-pilot. She was trying not to cry. Though, when she bumped into Jesse in the corridor on the way up to the trauma ward, she burst into tears before she could maintain her composure. Familiar faces did that when you were barely keeping it together. It was supposed to be a study day for Jesse, but he had to tell her that he was there beause Jace had a seizure through the night. That was enough for her to pull herself back together. She told Jesse she didn't want to saddle him with her problems, but Jesse being Jesse, he wheedled it out of her anyway.
Which is why he had escorted her to the room Zed was in. Zed was crashed out and the room was dimmed. Jesse offered to stay with him, but she chastised him and said she would be fine. He should go back to Jace and she would drop in on them later. Jesse gave her a companionable hug and then she was alone with her unconscious brother. She went into the room and sat down. For a few lingering moments, she just sat there with her head in her hands, her blonde hair falling down around her face. Was she bracing herself for this? Probably. Was she riddled with guilt for not seeing the signs again? Yes. Painfully yes.
Raising her head, Sally softly took Zed's hand that wasn't bound up in post-operative bandages and gauze. She didn't say a word, she just sat there, watching while he slept. Still holding his hand, she let her head come to rest against their laced fingers and put her other hand on Zed's belly, trying to somehow send him some comforting vibes. She hadn't been able to be there for Mick, so she was sure as fucking shit going to make sure she was there for Zed no matter what.
