"We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes—understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success." - Arianna Huffington
Fashion wasn’t really Jeff’s thing per se. He enjoyed it, and it was a part of being in the public eye, but he was mostly just grateful that he had people around him who would give him a smack in the head if he wore something that looked awful. Tonight, he was dressed extra nicely, though, joining Justin at a VIP event put on by FABULOUS, the magazine that his mother and uncle ran together. Jeff was in a suit that he probably wouldn’t have been able to afford when he was working at the veterinarian’s office, but even as an understudy, Caden ensured his cast and crew were always paid quite well, and Jeff had splurged on the black tailored suit with one of his first paychecks. Will would be there already, considering that he worked as an intern to Harley Rayner, a model and journalist for the magazine, so Jeff got to be Justin’s Plus One, much to the joking of Jeff, Justin, and Will that this would probably cause a tabloid hysteria. There were entire Tumblrs devoted to shipping Willstin, and Jeff would probably be the subject of major fangirl hate.
As they arrived in a limo, every step of this done with absolute class and style, Jeff’s eyes went wide. This place was both huge and gorgeous, and one painting on the wall probably cost more than a year of rent on his apartment. Justin arched an eyebrow at him and gave him a serious look. “Dude… Whatever you do in there, you cannot be basic. This is my mom’s magazine, and it’s a big deal. Everybody in there will be all expensive and glamorous. This isn’t our crew at work.”
Jeff wanted to roll his eyes and huff that he was quite capable of acting like a grownup, but he kind of couldn’t blame Justin for the warning just the same. He clearly still had some learning to do about not being a basic bitch. The two of them walked in together, and were immediately met by Justin’s mom, Gen, who was playing the role of the gracious hostess in high couture. She told both of them to have a good time, and they were off, making their way through the crowd. Jeff had to admit he felt more than a little overwhelmed. It wasn’t that he wasn’t used to being around well-dressed people. It was more the fact that these were actual designers, models, and people of all walks of life that he never dreamed he’d be seeing in person.
He was sipping a sparkling white grape juice – staying teetotal because he was here with Justin, and it was sort of a thing they stood together on as a cast. They didn’t drink around him, because alcohol was such a dangerous trigger for his condition, especially in conjunction with his medications. And that was when he looked up to catch someone staring at him across the room. There was little doubt what the gorgeous guy was thinking… it was some pretty intense eye-sex, and honestly, after how things had gone with Nick, maybe it was time to move on and just face the fact that he’d blown it and have a little fun. Besides all that, this wasn’t just any guy giving Jeff fuck-me eyes from across the room. This was Matteo… a world-renowned tenor with a voice like angels. Jeff owned everything he’d ever put out from a music perspective. Waiting hadn’t served him well with Nick. Maybe it was time to move forward without waiting for something to seemingly line up somehow.
He gave Justin a grin and told him that, if he didn’t come back, Justin shouldn’t wait for him. Justin gave Jeff a playful smile and shook his head. “Make sure you wrap, bitch!”
Jeff had every intention of wrapping when he strode over to where Matteo was standing, still holding his intense gaze, and extended his hand. “I’m Jeff,” he told him. “And I couldn’t help noticing that you were staring at me. But I couldn’t figure out if you were judging my suit, or just trying to figure out what I looked like under it.” It was a bold statement, and if it went badly, he’d probably earn a bitchslap from Justin, but he was relieved when Matteo was laughing. Maybe this night was going to be a lot more interesting than he’d expected.
