114.6. Picture Prompt
Paramedic
trigger: suicide attempt
On his days off, Luka liked to get up and watch the sunrise over the beach from his bedroom balcony. He was one of those lucky people in life who had found success and could afford a luxury like a beach house in the Hamptons. So, why not make the most of it as much as he could? He didn't take his wealth for granted. He was so grateful he could live here in a place that brought him a lot of peace and had proven to be an inspiration many times over. Some of his best writing was done sitting out on the sand of this very beach.
That morning was different. His Golden Retriever, Lily, was lying at his feet chewing her favourite toy like she did every morning he was out here. He had a cup of coffee in his hand that he was sipping whilst casually rubbing Lily's back with his toe. This stretch of beach was never busy this early. You would get the occasional dog walker or jogger going on their merry way, but it was few and far between. That day, there was a guy in the distance who seemed to be stumbling up the beach. He looked drunk, but it was impossible to tell from where Luka was watching him on the third floor of his house. A little while before, the guy had been sitting on the sand further up the beach. He had been there when Luka came out onto the balcony.
Now the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon, Luka could see the figure a little better. Not enough to know what was up. He was in a long winter coat that he was shedding and letting drop to the damp sand beneath his feet. It was just after that when he started to walk into the water, still fully clothed save for the coat. Okay, this didn't look good at all. "Hey! Hey, you're going to die of hypothermia!" Luka was yelling out to him, a vain attempt at best because with the sea breeze, it was unlikely he would be heard down at the shore with the small waves crashing onto the sand.
If he waited at all, Luka knew he would be too late. He put his coffee on the outdoor table, taking off through his bedroom and down the flights of stairs. Lily knew something had to be up and ran after him, issuing warning barks as she went. He was in his pyjamas and slippers, but he had kicked those off before he even left his bedroom or he probably would have tripped and fallen. The guy was quite far out into the water by the time Luka made it to the beach and he was getting pulled beneath the surface by the waves. Luka wasn't thinking about himself at this point. Hopefully he didn't end up with pneumonia out of this.
It wasn't easy. The guy in his clothing was heavy and he wasn't conscious when Luka swam up to him. He pushed him onto his back and held his head above the surface beneath his chin. It had to only be adrenaline at play that helped Luka get the guy out of the water and onto the shore. They were only just out of the water, the water still lapping over the guys legs. He wasn't just unconscious and not breathing, but he was bleeding from his wrists. Luka realised then in horror that he had just intercepted a suicide attempt.
Lily's barking at raised the alarm with Luka's room mates. His friend, Iain, was running down onto the sand. "CALL 911!" Luka screamed up the beach at him. The guy wasn't breathing, and his lips were blue. Luka was terrified, but he just acted, starting the CPR. Was it even his business to interrupt someone's suicide attempt? He didn't know. He was too scared to care either. If the guy died without him trying to do something, he would never be able to forget it. It would haunt him for the rest of his life. He put his knee down on one of the guys wrists, pushing his hand into the sand, but he didn't know how else to try to stop the bleeding and keep the CPR going.
It didn't look good, and Luka knew that this was another of those moments he was facing that would change his life forever.
