114.1. Lyrics

"'Cause I don't wanna lose you now
I'm lookin' right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now."

• Mirrors, Justin Timberlake

Nick could be a hopeless romantic when he wanted to be. It was no secret that he loved all those little things that came with being in a relationship. He enjoyed that closeness and connection, feeling like you had a partner in crime, no matter how crazy life could get. He had a few false starts that went wrong in his dating life. When he realised it was leaving him cynical and bitter, he knew it was time to brush himself off and move on. It hadn't been easy, but what it had led him to was meeting someone amazing that he was realising now he wanted to hang on to for a very long time.

When he got home from work that evening, Cheyne had been snoozing on the sofa with the credits from a movie rolling on the TV screen. He had dropped the remote on the floor and his hand had been hanging limply over the edge of the sofa cushion. Nick had been hit with a sensation of domesticity coming home to that. Cheyne was only staying with him while he recuperated from an emergency appendectomy that put him out of action for a few weeks. Even if only temporary for now, it was a sweet scene for Nick to come home to. He cherished these sweet things. He wanted these moments.

He made the mistake of bumping Cheyne's hand when he went to cover him with the throw rug draped over the back of the sofa. What all that managed to lead to was them slow dancing in front of the large window overlooking views of the city with the lights off and candles throwing a soft light across the room. Nick had planned to start cooking dinner and put some music on. Cheyne came and sat at the kitchen table to chat with him while he cooked, but they got side-tracked.

A slow song had come on, and Cheyne, a ballet dancer, asked Nick if he liked slow dancing. Nick admitted that he did, but he hadn't done it much. He had to wonder about that too. Maybe a lot of people thought this stuff was cheesy or contrived, but he didn't. A relationship was what you made it, but what would break it was a lack of quality time and a lack of showing your partner that having you with them meant the world to them. Or even better, gave you a thrill in your belly that you were incredibly lucky to have them.

Dinner was quickly shelved when Cheyne suggested they dance. What of that couldn't make Nick smile? He lit some candles why Cheyne plugged his cell phone into the dock and pulled up a particular song he had been looking for. Can't Help Falling in Love, the Darren Hayes version. At that moment, Nick was able to push everything else out of his mind, and it felt like he and Cheyne were the only people to exist. There was a poignancy in the song selection, Nick knew this. Maybe it was a spontaneous relationship moment that could be a sweet memory. Or maybe it was something more. Nick knew he was ready for more.

And Cheyne was amazing at slow dancing. It didn't take anything for Nick to easily follow his lead. Slow dancing was logistically simple. There was nothing to it. What made it was who you were with and how much they cared about you. Nick knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Cheyne cared about him. He had done nothing but show Nick this since the first night they spent together. "I think I've gone and fallen in love with you..." Nick found himself admitting; there was no need to even think about it.

Cheyne smiled at this. It wasn't going to be one of those awkward romcom moments where the recipient said something like, 'Thank you' or 'Nice day out, huh?'. "What a coincidence. So have I."

Yes, this was definitely one of those moments that made Nick cherish romance, and cherish the fact he appreciated it. Nick's arms just secured a little more tightly around Cheyne and they shared a long, lingering kiss. Whatever other crap he had gone through in the past, he was glad it had all happened to lead him here.
