116.1. Lyrics

"You cast a spell on me, spell on me
You hit me like the sky fell on me, fell on me
And I decided you look well on me, well on me
So let's go somewhere no one else can see, you and me."

• Glad You Came, The Wanted

Luka knew Valentine's Day was what you made it. You didn't have to be in a relationship to recognise it as special. Luka was the sort who got Valentine's cards and gifts for his moms, and also his best friends. Why the hell not? It was your life. You made your own rules. As miserable, cynical and bitter some people could be about the day, bottom line was, they were miserable, cynical and bitter, and Luka would rather be content and happy than any of those. If that meant making his moms smile because he sent them roses and cute Valentine's cards for for the day, and if it meant it made them laugh when he sent them one from 'The dog', their beloved pet, even better.

He did recognise that it had the ability to make some people feel lonely. If you took it for the bare bones black and white meaning, that is. So, knowing a friend was already feeling down and isolated, of course he wanted to do something nice for him on that day. If it was Easter, he would have brought him over and showered him with chocolate and a giant fluffy bunny. If it was Halloween, threw a costume party and ate candy until they puked. It was your choice to acknowledge a day of recognition. If you didn't want to have fun with it, don't belittle or bemoan others who want to. You don't have the steering wheel of their life, anymore than they do on yours. Matteo was a world apart from his home. He had family here, but that didn't stop him feeling homesick, and it didn't stop him missing his mother who had passed away from an car accident some years ago. Being in a strange and foreign place, emotions like this could really flare up on you. Luka just wanted to offer him some company, and someone to listen if he needed it.

So, Luka didn't at all believe you had to be in a relationship to enjoy Valentine's Day. It had been a chance encounter that he had come across Matteo in New York, realising he was thinking about staying here permanently; a massive move from his Italian roots. Luka had met Matteo at a social function in Italy when he had been over there for a publicity tour with one of his book releases. They had clear chemistry together, and Matteo had genius eye-sex skills, to say the very least. Both being single adults, it just meant their connection was a 'friends with benefits' arrangement, agreeing to 'catch up' if their schedules ever matched up again. It started as an incredibly passionate and hot one night stand in Italy, and then simply didn't stop at one night. After that, both with crazy, thriving careers, they never did manage to catch up again.

Until Matteo had suddenly just been there out of the blue. It had been fantastic seeing him after so long. Now they were in the same geographical location again, and the night before, Luak reached out to him by text knowing Matteo was struggling with the upheaval of the across-the-globe move from his home in Italy to be closer to his father and sisters in New York. Neither were dating, neither had plans for Valentine's Day... it made sense to hook up and chill out on that lazy Sunday together.

Morning had dawned, and Luka was always an early riser. Waking up slowly, the light from the sunrise was coming in through the cracks in the blinds. Luka looked over to Matteo who was occupying the space in the bed beside him. He was naked, lying sprawled on his stomach with his bare ass on show and an arm curled up around his face against the pillow. He was still out like a light; Luka could see the rhythmic rise and fall of his back with the deep and even breathing of a heavy sleep. Instead of getting up to make a coffee to watch the rest of the sunrise, Luka stayed there. He reached over to put his hand softly on Matteo's back, giving it the gentlest of affectionate rubs. If sex helped get Matteo's mind off the emotional tug-of-war he was feeling inside at the moment, so be it. Luka couldn't deny it was nice to have someone share his bed again, after far too long than he cared to admit to.

He was actually about to roll over and try to get a bit more sleep - something uncharacteristic for him - when his phone began to buzz on the nightstand. The volume was turned down, but the vibrate still on was causing enough noise to be a pain in the ass. He quickly snatched it up, peering at the display with squinted eyes in the dim light. Beside him, Matteo slept on. He didn't recognise the number. It was only around 7am, so it was early.

While he got up and grabbed his robe, he answered the call, only to be told it was a collect call and asked if he would accept it. When he heard the name, he agreed immediately and unlocked his bedroom door to step out onto his balcony, quietly sliding the door over behind him. Cole. Who was now locked away in the Chemical Dependency Crisis/Detoxification Unit in the City. Because he was dual-diagnosis of mental health with associated suicidal intent and substance addiction, it was the best place for him. Rehab wasn't intensive enough; he had failed at it many times in the past, Luka had been told. Despite their initial conversation in the wake of Luka intervening Cole's suicide attempt, Cole hadn't wanted to see him again after that. Nevertheless, Luka still requested Cole be given his phone number, in case he ever needed it.

"Cole?" he said when the call connected. "Is everything okay? I wasn't sure I'd hear from you again..."
