"Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing." - Camille Pissarro

To Fin, this place was probably as close to heaven as you could get near New York City. It wasn't a ranch like he had grown up on back home, but there were stables with connecting paddocks that housed horses right along a dirt track leading to a beautiful farmhouse. Beyond that, there was a paddock with cows, and back at the main house of the property, there had been chickens wandering around free range like they owned the place. Fin had spent most of the time since getting out of the car with his mouth hanging open, and he had still been doing the same as he squinted up at the lady in jodhpurs with his hand shielding the afternoon sun while she explain her horse business to them.

They walked a little way down the tracks to the gates leading into the horse paddocks. The lady suggested he go in and take a look around, promising all the mares in that paddocks were of calm temperament. Sawyer had laughed and said his son knew what he was doing either way, and encourage Fin to go in. Fin had a burst of shyness at her suggesting and was trying to hang back by the fence, but he had climbed up onto the bottom rung of the fence to lean over into the paddock to get a better look at the horses.

He didn't take the gate. He was a country boy. He just scaled the rest of the fence and jumped over into the paddock with ease. His dad hung back with the lady outside, chatting about whatever adults chatted about in situations like this. Probably not secret horse business, because his dad would be clueless on that front. They were all gorgeous, of course. Fin proceeded to go in and literally say hello to every single one. He stroked their manes and rubbed their noses softly, even at the first one, he was smiling for the first time in many days.

He had stopped at a statuesque Fresian when another beauty from nearby walked across the paddock to see him. She was a gorgeous caramel Appaloosa Palomino and she was nudging him gently in the shoulder with her nose. The Fresian didn't seem bothered and just moved away with a swish of her tail, so Fin's attention was solely on the Appaloosa by that point. He stroked his fingers through her mane and was talking softly her.

Of course, he didn't have intimate knowledge of her temperament. He kept one hand on her back, leaning carefully into her at all times. If she jerked or startled, he would feel it straight away and be able to grab her bridle to stop her harming him. She was happy with him stroking her nose, so he moved on to pet her jaw with a couple of soft strokes. She was watching him. She had beautiful eyes. Fin always thought horses had amazing eyes. Many thought they were just a tool, there to do a job. To Fin, they were just as worthy of affection as any small pet. Just because they couldn't sit on your lap didn't mean they didn't like being stroked and praised.

He was still smiling, and soon, he had an arm looped around her at her shoulders, giving her a gentle hug. She hadn't moved away. In fact, he found himself being nudged in the side of his head with her nose a few moments later. "You're really friendly, hey, girl?" he said and took some time then to have a closer look at her structure. He took an apple and a carrot from the pocket of his jacket that the lady had given him back up at the house. He offered the horse the apple on his flat palm, seeing if she had any interest taking it off him. Some horses could get bitey and aggressive if there was food on the go. There was no snatching. She ate it without any risk of his fingers getting bitten, so he gave her the carrot too.

Squinting again in the sun, Fin turned back to where his dad was standing with the lady. "Can she be ridden?" he called out to her and the lady gave him a thumbs up with a smile. Fin broke into a big smile at the confirmation. For the first time since he had left Arkansas and come to New York, he felt that fire in his belly return with a flicker of excitement. He was still grinning when he was once again nudged in the temple by a horse nose... closely followed by a sloppy lick to his cheek.

That was when he laughed. He hadn't laughed in a long time, and maybe there really was a chance things could eventually stop feeling so terrible.
