139.1. Lyrics
"I hear loves songs playing on the radio
People slow dancing everywhere I go
Well I'm a good slow dancer but you'd never know
Cause everybody's got somebody but me
Yeah they do."
• Everybody's Got Somebody But Me, Hunter Hayes
When Sam woke, he was groggy and disoriented from having been in a deep sleep. When he shifted to automatically reach to turn his clock towards him, he realised someone was beside him on the bed, and they were holding his hand gently against his chest. He started, not expecting company in his bed. It had been awhile since he woke up with anyone beside him. He squinted through the sleepy haze, taking in Lisa lying there beside him, sleeping. Her other hand was resting on his stomach. She was still fully clothed in the the outfit she arrived in to check on him the day before when he hadn't been well.
He couldn't stop a heavy sigh escaping him. Whatever the mixed feelings beginning to creep up on him here, he didn't let go of her hand. It was nice that she was holding it, and it was nice that she was there beside him, sharing his bed. It was completely innocent. That could be what was confusing him most of all.
Loneliness was an emotion Sam had become accustomed to over the years since he lost his wife and high school sweetheart to cancer. She had been pregnant with their first child, and made the difficult choice to delay chemo until the baby was born. It turned out to be a decision that not only claimed her life, but the baby wasn't grown enough to save either. Back then, Sam felt like he would never fall in love again. He truly believed you only found one true love in a life time, and he could never fathom replacing Michelle. It didn't feel like he would ever know how to love anyone again. Instead, he dealt with his grief by joining Doctors Without Boarders, and departing Australia for a few years overseas.
But his heart did heal eventually, and some years later, after moving to New York to be closer to his brothers, he met Lisa. They fell in love, talked about getting married. Even though she had grown children of her own, it felt like a miracle came when she told Sam she was pregnant, and with twins. Sam had been over the moon. He had always wanted to be a father, and life began to feel right again. Only, tragedy struck him a second time. Lisa miscarried right before Sam was planning on proposing to her. The grief and heartache of it all had them calling it quits on their relationship. They remained close friends, and Lisa moved back to London to take another role on the West End.
Ever since then, Sam had just felt lost. He felt like he was never going to find love again, and he was more than convinced his time to be a dad had passed. He missed the boat. He was a guardian to Cooper, the son of a childhood friend from Sydney who wanted to extend his time of exchange because he met his first love and didn't want to let that go. Sam didn't mind. Cooper had lost his father at war and struggled because of it. They kept each other company. Sam didn't have to be alone in his tiny apartment with just his work to focus on.
He wasn't alone, but he was lonely. He was surrounded by happy couples, right down to teenagers who seemed to have that sweet, innocent love like he had with Michelle once upon a time. Even if he still wasn't feeling 100%, he was overwhelmed how nice it was to wake up with company. He hadn't even asked her to come over. She just saw he was ill, and not only came right away, but stayed. He lay there quietly for a little while, watching Lisa sleep. Until he told himself not to get caught up in the moment, and his gaze shifted back to the ceiling. But he didn't get up. He wasn't ready for this moment of caring companionship to be over.
Soon, he shifted to roll onto his side facing her. Instead of letting his mind and heart go into overdrive, plunging him into more confused loneliness, he just closed his eyes and willed himself to go back to sleep. Later, he would put the feelings down to not feeling well and being tired.
Later, he would go right back to facing day in, day out routinely amidst a constant faint niggle of loneliness and wonder what he had done to deserve not having someone special to live out the rest of his days with.
