"Amazing how manageable life can feel with only one blanket and the right two arms." - Tyler Knott Gregson
Caring for someone could take on many forms. It just so happened that doing laundry was one of them. Like many, Sasha wasn't exactly a fan of doing laundry, but his mom had given him a Mom Talk before he came to stay with Justin and his dad about being a guest boarding with someone else and ensuring he pulled his weight with things like chores, cooking, and laundry. Typically, he was a messy teenager. This wasn't a typical situation, and he wanted to prove he could be mature and responsible here. That was the territory the needed proving right now, with him trying to step up and show he could take care of Justin when he was sick. Or even when he wasn't. Just in general. It was the little things. That was what mattered.
Justin had an appointment with his psychiatrist, so his dad took him along to that. Sasha got busy doing all their laundry, unstacking the dishwasher, and changing the bed clothes on Justin's bed. Then he sort of felt a bit lost, worrying how Justin was getting on. After making the bed, he had a playful wrestle with Dory, who was bringing him a pile of her puppy toys one after the other. He had everything dumped on his foot from a slobbery Sebastian the Crab plushy to one of those chewy knots that she had undone one end of. There was also something that looked suspiciously like it once used to be a sock, but she had clearly claimed it as one of her toys.
with some little determined, yet harmless, growls, Dory was trying to tug the sock out of his hand. He let her win, of course. That was part of the fun. She would run off with it, do a lap up and down the hall outside the bedroom door, and then come back for more. It must be a victory lap in pup language. Just as she bolted out of the room this time, Sasha paused and glanced over his shoulder at the neatly made bed, an idea slowly coming to him.
It was quite a while later when Justin and his dad came home. One of the earliest things Justin had told Sasha was that his sessions with the psychiatrist could be emotionally exhausting, especially if he was having an episode like he was now. Sasha heard them arriving home when the door open and closed in the distance, so he went out to meet them. Justin looked wrecked. Completely wiped out. He was pale, red and swollen eyes like he had been crying, and his hands hidden up in the sleeves of an oversized hoodie. The hood was up, and he was hugging his arms around himself. Mr Campbell asked him if he wanted a cuppa, but Justin declined and said he wanted to go back to bed.
The weather forecast had predicted about 26 degrees that day, so it was damn cold. When Sasha offered his hand to Justin, Justin took it, but his fingers were chilled, even if they had been buried within his sleeves. Sasha brought Justin's hand to his lips and kissed the backs of his fingers before he led him back to his room. "I kind of took a tiny little bit of a leap of faith here, so if it freaks you out, just tell me. I also took a before picture to prove I made the bed before I started," he admitted sheepishly, pushing Justin's bedroom door open.
Inside, he had completely transformed Justin's bed into a blanket fort. He had found all the spare linen in the linen press when he was going to change the bedding, and he probably shouldn't have been left to his own devices. Beneath the layered walls of blankets and sheets, there were piles of pillows, and more blankets inside. Strung across the fabric walls, he had pegged a string of LED fairy lights that had been stashed in the back of the linen press. They had toppled out when he found the new sheets for Justin's bed, and he had to snatch them up before Dory nabbed them and bolted off with them. He had only been quicker than her by a split second.
He had managed to create a cosy little cocoon out of his efforts. He knew that right now, the world was too hard for Justin to face. His protective zone had been his bed for a few days now, but Sasha hadn't stopped wanting to do things for him while he wasn't feeling well. Maybe this was a bit nuts. It might be the last thing Justin wanted, and that was okay. But he still wanted to try to do something nice for him, a little gesture to show him he loved him and wanted to take care of him. "I thought we could lie in it together. Watch a movie, or listen to an audiobook. Or I can just hold you while you sleep. We don't have to do anything you don't want to..."
Justin was staring at the blanket for for moments that linger so much, Sasha almost thought he might have fucked up. Justin just wanted to go to bed, and Sasha had gone and made a snuggle Disneyland out of it. But soon, when he turned to Sasha, although he had unshed tears in his eyes, there was the faintest of smiles on his lips. "How are you real?"
"Probably something to do with my mom and dad having sex this one time..." Sasha joked, but he was giving Justin a smile that was tinged with sadness. If he had a choice, he wouldn't want Justin to be feeling pain at all. But he was, and Sasha wanted to be able to comfort him in some way. It didn't matter what. This was one of many ways he could test drive in the future if he and Justin stayed together. He hoped they did. "Want to hop in?"
Justin nodded and let Sasha take his weight so he could kick his shoes off. Once they were in together, Sasha unclipped one of the pegs, and the 'doorway' to the blanket fort was closed... but only after Dory jumped up to follow them inside. With a little careful shifting, they were lying inside together, and Sasha wrapped his arms around Justin, kissing his hair. He couldn't save Justin from his mental illness, and he couldn't take away his depression. But he could keep showing him he loved him and wanted to take care of him. Not everything would always work, but that day, it did, and that day was the only thing they needed to think about for now because when Justin was sick, fighting one day for Justin could feel like an entire war... but one he didn't need to battle alone.
