"We consume our tomorrows fretting about our yesterdays." - Persius

Chase hadn't been home to Australia for a good five years, give or take. But recently, a strange sensation of homesickness had been creeping up on him and because he felt the urge to act on it, he figured it was more than just the shitty cold weather causing it. He had no intentions of visiting family because he wasn't particularly close to any of them. He just wanted to plant his feet on some Aussie sand, have a decent beer, a barbie, and surf.

Having a few weeks off after Christmas and not an iota of a clue what he should do to fill it, he knew he had to go somewhere. So, why not just upsticks home for awhile? )

"Passion is the quickest to develop, and the quickest to fade. Intimacy develops more slowly, and commitment more gradually still." - Robert Sternberg

Connor had been on really cool trips before. It sort of came with the territory of growing up in a well-to-do family, and he was well used to the perks that came with his parents’ money. It had turned him into every bit the rich cocky bitch, but he had no shame about that. It was what it was, and he was okay with it for the most part. But he’d never gone away on a trip with a guy he was seeing, if only, perhaps, because he wasn’t really in the habit of having guys he was seeing in the first place. But on Christmas Day, Chase had brought up the idea of a trip to Australia for the New Year almost as casually as if he were suggesting ordering out for dinner. It wasn’t like Chase just to assume that was what Connor wanted to do – something that the law student had long since come to appreciate about the doctor. Chase didn’t push Connor. He put things out there, and they discussed them together, figured out what worked for them, which was how they came to even be calling their relationship a relationship in the first place at that, though beyond it being a relationship, they didn’t put many labels on it.

Labels didn’t really matter to Connor anyway... )

LAUGH

Chase would never admit that he missed House. It wasn’t in a way that people missed lost loved ones. More in a way of House being such a giant pain in the arse constant in his life for so long that there was a void. Maybe there always would be.

After lingering suspicions that House faked his own death, suddenly out of the blue he received an unsigned Christmas card in the post with Santa mooning the receiver with his giant pale arse. Chase just closed his eyes with a long-suffering shake of his head. All he could do was laugh.

CARESS

Chase had spent many nights lying awake alone with his thoughts as he stared blankly at the ceiling, sleep evading him. Insomnia had attacked again, only this time, he wasn’t lying in his own bed. He glanced over at the naked, sleeping body beside him for a few moments, pausing in the absent-minded toying of the St. Christopher’s Medal on the chain around his neck.

He rolled onto his side, shifting closer to Connor and softly caressed his bare shoulder. He missed this intimate and peaceful solitude with someone, and now he really didn’t want to let it go again…

"I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms."

• Into My Arms, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Chase had made so many trips to Philadelphia in the last few weeks that he could practically drive the route on auto-pilot. Not quite as auto-pilot as the time he was driving home from a long and hard nightshift, accidentally fell asleep at the wheel and nearly slammed into the back of a pick-up truck. Sometimes it paid to sleep in your car a bit before you actually turned on the engine, no matter how short the drive was.

He had a couple of days off to kill and even though he hadn't actually told Connor his trips to Philly weren't just booty calls but checking to make sure he was okay, he wasn't too proud to take the perks with the job at hand... )

"If you aren't in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret." - Jim Carrey

( contains spoilers for How To Get Away With Murder )

Chase stood by his bedroom window just on sunrise, looking out into the bleak morning as the rain poured outside. The weather was fitting for the night he had and there was no doubt a tension headache was making itself known like a tight band clamped around his forehead. But he made a promise that he was going to keep it, and as he put his cell phone to his ear, listening to the rings, he glanced over at his bed where Connor was sprawled on his stomach beneath the mess of sheets and quilt with his dark hair hanging in his eyes.

The line connected and he glanced away, back to the miserable view outside... )

MEMORY

Chase didn’t have many of good memories. He always thought a time would come in his life where a happy memory was just as common as getting up and having a successful day at work. But he was still waiting, and he knew he mostly had no one to blame but himself.

He had lots of regrets. Not just from his own mistakes, but from failures of his family too. Going at life alone was supposed to have been a fresh, hopeful start. Now time was ticking away more quickly than ever. He was well overdue for these happy memories.

BEER

These days, Chase found himself sometimes having a drink alone. Sure, it was probably pathetic, but possibly also symbolic of how he was currently feeling in his life. He sat at the bar alone nursing a beer, occasionally glancing at the TV where an Aussie footy game played that he sweet-talked his way into having it switched to.

Only this time, he was here to think. Think alot. He couldn’t get his mind off someone that was right under his nose all this time and now, he was trying to figure out what the hell he should do about it.

#01 - Drunk

Drunk sex should be illegal. There couldn’t be anything good that could come from it. Any, you forgot because your brain was in a booze-soaked haze. All you were left with was a rotten hangover and remnants of regret over the stupid things you did whilst drunk.

When the timer on her phone buzzed, Allison resolutely reached over to grab the stick from the pregnancy test kit. She held it in her hand for a moment, bracing herself, and then flipped it over to see the result. A half-sob, half-moan escaped her.

Nope. Nothing good ever came from drunk sex.

RUN

It took a few minutes for him to find some clarity through the morning freshly-woken haziness. Once it came, though, he remembered quickly what had gone down the night before. Typical of his track record, he had gone and done it again, and he probably should be kicking himself by this point.

Only this time, no one had run away. There was an arm around his waist and a warm, naked body spooned up behind his. They had stayed, and because of that alone, he realised he had a hell of a lot to think about all of a sudden...

#25 - APOLOGY

Cameron owed Chase an apology. It was some seriously pathetic move to get drunk (again) and sleep with him (again), only to run out and leave him alone (again). She was so sure she had made some massive changes to herself since leaving Princeton Plainsboro, and it was why she knew she had to face the music.

She packed the last few things into her overnight bag and zipped it shut. She hadn’t been back to Princeton since House’s funeral and it was going to be beyond surreal. But despite the butterflies in her stomach, it was now or never.

HOMESICK

These days, Chase got homesick a lot less than he used to. Back in his early days in America, it was being surrounded by unfamiliar things that triggered the homesickness as opposed to really yearning for the home he left. The home he left hadn’t been a happy place in a very long time.

But he loved Australia, and one day, he hoped he could settle down with someone that he could take back and share all the things he loved about his home country. He even hoped that one day, he could share it with kids of his own...

RELATIONSHIP

Chase liked the comfort of being in a relationship. He liked the company, he liked spooning up beside someone in bed, or going out for a nice meal. He liked that butterfly feeling in his gut when he got excited about seeing them after a hard day’s work, and he like the feelings that came with taken care of someone you were in love with.

He just had no idea why his love life always seemed to crash and burn whenever he tried to make it work. For some reason, he was romantically-challenged and didn’t know how to fix it.

VOICE

On every attempt to call, Chase kept getting Allison’s voicemail. He really wanted to talk to her, but if she was busy or screening, voicemail was better than nothing.

“Hey, Al. I know this is not that you don’t want to talk to me and more being scared of what will come of it, but we can’t just leave it like this. You’re one of the most important people in my whole world and...” a pause, “I miss you. I didn’t realise how much until I saw you again. Please just call me? RING

Chase still had his wedding ring. He never managed to bring himself to get rid of it. What did one do with a used wedding ring from a marriage that was now over with?

Shoved right at the back of his bottom drawer beside his bed was an old sock without a pair. He dug around for it and pulled it out. A pause, and then he tipped the ring into his palm. It was something that still held a lot of memories, good and bad. It was something he knew he could never just toss away as an afterthought.

Sexy

Waking up with a hangover naked in bed with an equally naked body beside you could either be good or bad. That morning, for Chase, it was probably about equal amounts of both with a side order of amused smugness... that lasted all of 7.5 seconds before the enormity of the situation hit him. He looked over his shoulder, double-checking that the body who was there was who he was assuming it was.

Cameron.

Shit, this couldn’t be good. They were divorced. And before that, their marriage had crashed and burned for a variety of reasons. Then before even that, they had slept together for the first time when Cameron had been high on drugs after a splash injury at work where she thought she might end up Positive. Their history was extremely tumultuous. So, why the hell did she have to look so goddamn fucking sexy lying there with her blonde hair strewn across the pillow and just the most teasing of hints of breast and arse cleft on display? Not fair.

He didn’t know whether he should stay or leave quickly before she woke up and things got awkward. If he left, she would probably be pissed. But if he stay, probably pissed and indignant that it should never have happened. That might be a conversation better had not in person. He carefully rolled onto his back and sighed, looking up at the ceiling of the hotel room.

If it was all so wrong, then why did it all feel so fucking right?
