"Dark is the night
I can weather the storm
Never say die
I've been down this road before
I'll never quit
I'll never lay down, mm
See I promised myself that I'd never let me down."
• Win, Brian McKnight
Mark lost track of how long he had been sitting in the living room staring out the large windows at the view over the city. The rest of the apartment was quiet, but his mum was pottering around somewhere in the kitchen baking anything she could get her hands on and his son was asleep in his bedroom up the hall. Gen was out for a quick lunch date with her brother to touch base with him after everything that had gone down and his dad was spending the day with James and Campbell at the zoo. The tea Mark made himself awhile ago had long since gone cold, only half finished and forgotten when he caught himself in a web of thoughts trying to regroup after everything that had happened. He had gotten up three times in an hour to check on Justin, and his son was still out like a light in the same position on his stomach each time (prompting Mark to check he was still breathing the second and third times). Everything was just so starkly prominent right now that his emotions felt drawn in about twenty different directions.
The apartment buzzer went, and his mum called out softly that she would get it for him. He nodded, even if she couldn't see him through walls and went back to staring out the window, stewing over his thoughts. But they were soon interrupt again with a happy squeal of, "Daddy!" followed by little footsteps running up the hall and into the living room. He soon had an armful of a energetic blonde bundle and his face was being showered with sloppy kisses.
( He couldn't help but smile and kissed his five year old daughter on the lips... )
