Jyn has another nightmare. They're not uncommon at her age. Mama says that it's from watching too many episodes of The Octave Stairway, too many holodramas before bedtime. Jyn, ever rebellious and stubborn, protests and says that it's not while crossing her arms over her chest. She even makes a show of stomping her foot while the word "not" lurches from her tongue. Her Papa scoops her up in his arms and carries her back to bed. He pulls the covers up over her head to make her laugh, pretending he's unable to find her. She tries to stay as silent as possible underneath the blanket, using a small, chubby hand to stifle the giggles gurgling in her throat.

( Papa folds them back down and brushes the hair away from his Stardust's face. She reaches up and grabs his hand, presses it to her cheek. She loves the way he always smells of oil, of exhaust and work and labor. She loves the way he taps the tip of her nose when he tells her that he loves her. )

She had called him shortly after he had gone on stage with Justin to sing back-up with him for Silent Night. He had been with Maryanne, so that helped. The stage fright hadn't stayed at bay, but he got there in the end.

When I got an offer to drive in the Race of Champions, for the first time that the event has ever been held in the United States, I said yes without really thinking about it. It was an honor to be invited and I didn't know if I'd ever have the chance again. But then I looked at my calendar this week and realized that the Race of Champions takes place just four days before the kickoff of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, which I have participated in for the last two years.

After school, he wouldn’t even bother going home to change, he would just drive to the hospital from school and chill there for a couple of hours before he had to go home for dinner. Though, this last week, his schedule had begun to change in ways he was still trying to wrap his head around.

“What are you grinning at?” Andi asked him, interrupting his thoughts.

Sasha looked up from his textbook in his lap, from where he was probably doing a good imitation of studying, when really he had been daydreaming, his concentration lapsing ages ago. "What?"

He had a can of Dr Pepper tucked in under his arm, and was sipping it from a long bendy straw so he didn't need to be sitting up to indulge. A present from Andi when it became evident he would be spending many hours on a bed with her.

"What are you thinking about?" A pause. "Or... should I say who?"

Isak sat at a table on the sidewalk outside of a cafe, his heart suddenly racing and his forehead collecting sweat. I would've done a little dance when I got out of the car if I had any moves.

To be fourth, to be among the top five fastest competitors in our first full test at Phoenix when I wasn't even sure I'd be any good on this track since I'd never driven it before, just blew my mind yesterday. All I wanted was to put up a solid number and I put up a great one. I climbed out and high-fived my strategist and hugged my engineer and generally acted like a geek for a good five minutes just feeling accomplished.

Little did I know the best was yet to come. Today I posted the single fastest time out of the entire field in our afternoon session, and the person behind me on the leaderboard? My old teammate. I spent so many months studying and being worried that I wouldn't know how to drive Phoenix and I just kicked ass. I'm so proud of everything that my entire team has been able to do to make this car as good as it's been this weekend.

And it's a confidence booster. Looking at these numbers I know I can feel good about myself when we come back here to race for real in a few months. I won't be worried about having that slow start and screwing up our season. That's going to mean a lot to me. You can have a great car and you've still got to have a great driver, and now I know I'm going to be okay. It's going to be a fun season.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got an evening test to run. Let's see if I can be number one twice today.

Phone calls went straight to voicemail, despite ringing a few times in a row. Sometimes people might just pick up to tell you to fuck off and stop ringing. Sometimes a 'fuck off' was better than nothing at all... especially from someone who had history of substance addiction, depression, and suicide attempts.

Time felt like it had no value right now. All the seconds, minutes, hours, days were meshing into one big vortex of nothingness. The one thing Clint wanted to happen just wasn't. No matter how long he sat there for, Lincoln just looked exactly the same as he did the first time Clint saw him in this room after the surgery. About three times a day, some sort of therapist would come in. They would move him, massage his hands or feet, move pillows to put under his arms or legs. The nurses would change his gowns, change his sheets, mess about with the IV machines. But he always ended up back in that one vaguely similar place every time, unmoving except for the rise and fall of his chest in rhythm with the ventilation pumps.

I've had the opportunity over the last few months to spend time with a number of other champions. I was a guest at NASCAR Champion's Week in Las Vegas and had a really long conversation with Kyle Busch about our respective comebacks. I've done a lot of work with Brad Keselowski. I've gotten to meet Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. And last week I had a UFC champion giving me career advice.

I've also been blessed to have a very specific type of people in my life. I guess I just am drawn to them or something, but many of the people closest to me are either current or former soldiers. They've spent their lives working for some of the most elite units in the world, and they've also taught me many things. Most notably that no matter how high I climb I'm still not getting up every day doing anything that's going to change the world.

In many ways, he was still a kid. This was all learning he had to do.

3 - "Animals" by Maroon 5. If we had individual driver introduction songs, this would be mine. Because I hunt you down and take you out.

4 - "Shut up and Dance" by Walk the Moon. The guys played this in a welcome back montage they made for me at the Championship Celebration. It always makes me smile to hear it now.

5 - "What Makes A Good Man" by The Heavy. Peter got me turned on to them when he played their album in the gym.

6 - "We Run This Town" by Luke Bryan. I don't like country, but I do like this song.

7 - "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. First of all, Ed Sheeran is adorable. Second of all, I enjoy playing this and making all the tough guys around me confused and slightly awkward.

8 - "Boom Clap" by Charli XCX. It's the song I use for my warm-up runs. Upbeat, but not too upbeat when I'm still trying to wake up and waiting for my coffee.

9 - "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Kesha. I believe everyone needs a good party song somewhere on their playlist at all times. You never know when you might need it.

Curtis didn't know the first thing about being a father. He knew that, and he accepted it, because going in like a bull at a gate with a lot of father-knows-best bullshit would not only fuck his relationship with his son and said son's mother from the very start, but would make him a pretty major dickhead. He was brand new to this. If he were being honest, he'd known for a while now that Benny was his on some level. Just because the numbers lined up pretty closely didn't mean that he was Benny's dad, but he also knew Dani, and he knew she wasn't in the habit of fucking her way through every guy in the world. Not that he would've judged if she had been. He was of the belief that your body was your own, and what you did with it, so long as you weren't hurting anyone else, more power to you.

But before he'd headed over to Dani's, he had to admit, though, that he was nervous about meeting his son for the first time. Benny was nearly three years old, and according to Ash, he looked like Curtis, though Curtis himself had looked at the photos in Dani's office ever since he'd started to wonder about the boy being his son, and he couldn't say he'd seen it. All he saw when he looked at the photos was Dani. He had Dani's coloring, and from the photos, he looked small and petite, just like she was. Maybe he'd see it more when he actually saw the little guy in person.

( What he hadn't been expecting was for Dani to call him and tell him that she needed him to go over to her place and take over for her twin... )

He'd never really given much thought to scars before that moment in that cramped airplane bathroom. He had a few; most of which he couldn't remember getting; but they'd never impacted him in any real way. Hers, however... hers had set his teeth on edge. Her scar had changed so many things. From his perception of her and outward, until if left him questioning his entire outlook on life. It was as though that scar had been a missing puzzle piece into the life and mind of Lisa Reisert. It all fell into place and made sense, gazing upon that slight pink line of raised flesh. And in that moment, he wanted to damn the person who gave her that scar. Because as that scar had healed; hard and rigid; so had she. That toughness that came with scarring... that had been the beginning of the end for him.

Her scar healed and so had she, forever changed from the person she'd been before it.

He wonders if it's the same now, with her new scars. If she feels the same way about hers as he does about his. The ones SHE gave him. Because while her scars made her stronger... he thinks his scars may have weakened him. Yes, he was certainly changed forever like her, but not for the better. Mentally... emotionally? As they healed, he didn't. No, his festered and began eating away at him. Perhaps that was why he found himself outside home late at night, once again. Trying to heal those scars so deep inside him and go back to a time when things were simpler. A time where he didn't crave her and her wretched resilience in his life.

His fingers touch his throat and he swallows hard. He should get moving. She had to be at work in an hour.

It was one of those days at the theatre where there was a lot going on, and in the middle of it, a dress rehearsal to make sure the costumes were still in tip-top condition and no one was about to split their pants (again - Justin still vehemently denied it, though). It was also the middle of summer, so even if the airconditioning was going at full-speed, rehearsing for a show like that in the lead role left Justin sweating up a storm and wishing there was a swimming pool out back he could go dive into to cool down.

( He finished the number with his co-star, Autumn, and was just wiping his face off with a towel one of the stage hands had gave to him when his phone left off the side of the stage pinged a couple of times with a few new text messages... )

Of all nights for New York to have a storm, it had to be this one. There was a crack of thunder outside and a flash of lightning could be see through the curtains. Quentin hoped it wasn't some sort of sign that they shouldn't have made this decision. Deciding to foster a child who had been through traumatic times and left in the care of the authorities because his mother was thrown in prison on drug charges, and his father was long-dead from an overdose was huge. But it had been impossible to forget about the little boy once they were aware of him.

( The foster process had been arduous and time-consuming, but once they suddenly had to collect him, it felt like no time had passed at all. Tanner was such a beautiful little kid, just over two years old, but he had been nothing but miserable since they picked him up... )

He was every bit the result of a one night stand, the night that Liz lost her virginity, far older than most people were when they got to that point. He was the result of a pregnancy she hadn't known about until days before Blake was born. She had barely put on any weight at all, and she didn't look pregnant. And then all of a sudden, here was this tiny boy who she and Cameron were responsible for, and she still wasn't sure she knew what she was doing.

Mark wouldn't admit to anything but the fact that the heart attack he had a good few weeks back now had only been minor. And anyway, his son had been seriously sick and they had all gone through a terrifying time, so who could really blame him for having a heart attack anyway? He was just getting seriously bored of the diet he was supposed to be adhering to and he was pretty sure he had rested enough to last him a lifetime. He didn't like to admit that he still got a little short of breath sometimes and even though there was no chest pain or worrying symptoms, he did get tired easily.

Now that his son was on the mend and actually quite thriving compared to what he had been the other week, Mark was already on the campaign to get back to work so he could begin getting down to the bones of Justin's custody case. A custody case that should never be happening because the grounds for it were absolutely ludicrous, but he would do whatever it took to protect his son from more pain... and if that meant taking his selfish bitch of a mother down in a court of law, then it was going to happen. It was convincing his cardiologist identical twin that he was fine to stop the prescribed rest and jump into preparing the case like a dog with a bone.

( So, here he was, in bed resting - again - and trying to urge himself to be interested in any one of the latest books he had added to his iPad just out of sheer boredom... )

They had all know this difficult time would be upon them sooner rather than later, but no matter how much time they had to prepare, it still felt like a huge impact to have Beau out of action and separated from their little family bubble. But the bone marrow transplant procedure was Beau’s best chance of survival after the long and painful battle with leukemia, and for the second time in his life.

Angel was sitting out in one of the hospital waiting rooms, his baby daughter nursed in his arms while he fed her a bottle. She had a loose hold of the bottle with one of her hands while she drank and peered up at him, just watching him. There had been a couple of months there where she was really unsettled with colic and wouldn’t sleep through the night, but she seemed to be settling now and Angel felt like he was getting more of his groove as a daddy when he was pretty sure in the first couple of months of Daisy’s life, he was epic daddy fail on many levels.

There was nothing quite like the comforting nest of your own bed when times were tough and you weren't feeling good... or even forgot what feeling good felt like. Despite the shit hitting the fan the night before and the fact it caused Riley a bad enough break down to nearly ruin everything, he told Grayson to come home with him once the infusions were done.

He was too tired to analyse anything. His brain had stopped functioning rationally hours before, and this was just one of those things that just was and didn't need to be explained. There was little conversation as they arrived back at Riley's place around mid-morning. Riley's sole focus was reminding his feet to keep putting one step in front of the other to get him home and trying to push away the ever-present urge to be physically sick. A shower didn't help much, though he did attempt to wash away the feeling of being dirty that was back; one he thought he had shed years ago. He scrubbed at his skin until it was red and sore, and then covered up in pyjamas once he was done to crawl into bed.

But then Julie came into his life, and she was beautiful, smart, strong, and would kick his arse to Antarctica and back if he pissed her off. He hadn’t even recognised it as love until it hit him one day. And now? Now she was his wife.

Maybe his brain had just reached its capacity right when it was literally a life or death situation where he had to keep his wits about him.

He hadn't left to run away, but he had admittedly needed a timeout, and the uncertainty of what would come once he did depart his home town had made leaving really hard.

He hadn't been sleeping the best lately, and most nights it was lightly so he could keep an awareness on his son in case he needed him. Nights seemed to be the worse. When it was dark, when Stiles mind seemed to kick into overdrive the most. He was sure it was the sound of someone crying that roused him. Maybe he dreamt it, but maybes weren't enough for him to base anything on right now.

Logan knew it wasn’t fair to be jealous of a sixteen year old kid. He wasn’t even sure if it was jealousy, and more just envious that he couldn’t join in. Justin was a pretty special kid. He was a battler, one of those kids who had to face a lot of shit in his short life, but still got back up like a fighter because he had too much inside him to let go to waste. He had fluked a Broadway audition for a reprisal of Footloose, which Logan had been going to audition for himself before he got injured and rendered himself too incapacitated to dance.

Stiles knew he had screwed up, but he just did not have the energy to fight with Scott. He actually couldn't remember the last time they truly had a fight that led to a fallout warranting the silent treatment or periods of time apart. There had been sort of a brief attempt at when not long after Scott got the bite that fizzled out because Stiles never really had the attention span or stamina to follow through on one. It had been a few years since their last massive fight, and honestly, he could barely even remember what it had been about because it was so much less significant now in the wake of the things they had recently faced together.

( Normally, he would give as good as he got, but this time, he just sort of threw in the towel and let Scott get to his butthurt sulking about the fact Stiles hadn't told him something that was pretty damn significant in the grander scheme of things... )
